The unique position of design in the political context of postwar Belgium. In the postwar era, design became important as a marker of modernity and progress at world fairs and international exhibitions and in the global markets. The Belgian state took a special interest in this vanguard phenomenon of 'industrial design' as a vital political and economic strategic tool in the context of the Cold War and the creation of the European community. This book describes the unique position that design occupied in the political context of postwar Belgium as it analyses the public promotion of design between 1950 and 1986. It traces this process, from the first government-backed manifestations and institutions in the 1950s through the 1960s and 1970s, until design lost its privileged position as a state-backed institution, a process which culminated in the closure of the Brussels Design Centre in 1986, in the midst of the Belgian federalisation process. A key figure in this history is the policymaker Josine des Cressonnières, who played a leading role in the national and international design community and succeeded in connecting very different political worlds through the medium of design.

This book explores the relation between modern design and the Belgian State. The ideology of modern design was closely linked to the utopian attempt of improving the everyday material world. Modernists had the universal belief that everyday spaces and objects affected their users in such a way that design practice could be a kind of political and social reform, or even a moral education. Modern design was however not only invested with these social aspirations, but knew also succes in political circles as an exponent for ideological positions, as a tool for political propaganda or as a marker of national identities. Also the Belgian state mobilized the universal idea of modern design to construct a positive national image for cultural, economic and diplomatic purposes. The famous Expo 58 with its iconic Atomium in Brussels are great examples of this engagement of the state with design to convey a sense of modernity. This book looks beyond the typical Belgian icons and shows how design was framed in economic and political debates in Belgium from the mid 19th century until the 1980s. De Belgische clubcultuur ontpopt zich in de jaren '70. Leegstaande gebouwen in historische stadscentra worden hotspots voor kunst en muziek en panden gelegen naast landelijke steenwegen worden omgevormd tot ruimtes die enkel 's nachts tot leven komen. De opkomst van de elektronische muziek in de laten jaren '80 en '90 geeft het Belgisch nachtleven een nieuwe impuls en het commercieel succes van deze nieuwe muziek leidt rond de eeuwwisseling tot de opkomst van de elektronische muziekfestivals. Grafisch ontwerp is een essentieel onderdeel van de Belgische clubcultuur. Vaak zijn flyers en posters de enige fysieke aandenkens die overblijven na een clubnacht. Een nadere blik op het ontwerp van deze vluchtig geproduceerde en snel geconsumeerde objecten geeft ons een idee van de brede waaier aan levensstijlen, grafische strategieën, subculturen, muziekgenres, identiteiten en creativiteit die gekoesterd werden door het Belgische clubleven.
