The paper presents some examples of rural lordship in Southern Italy, mainly in Campania, using primary sources of different kind: public and private records, books of the Lord's chancery, dossiers for the feudal relief, administrative correspondences. It seems that some characteristics of rural lordship of the high middle ages were present also in late middle and early modern Southern Italy: the seigneurial estates were heterogeneous, had no territorial continuity and passed frequently from a Lord to another; there were men who depended on a Lord although they were free and who had to give corvées (but receiving a payment) and symbolic honours to the Lord and to the King; there was still a connection between manorial dependence, fiscal exemption, and immigration.

By studying the archives of the feudal Lords of Southern Italian between the 14th-16th centuries you can understand the real nature of their power and how it was expressed. The volume, which takes into account the most recent historiography, relies on the study and inventory of important documentary collections held in the Archivio di Stato of Naples, such as the Sommaria (Relevi with the files for feudal succession; Dipendenze, I, Conti erariali dei feudi and Diversi, with the seigneurial account books acquired by the State of those lord who had been rebellious or had died without heirs). The authors deal also with the cartularies ('platee') of aristocratic dynasties as the Ruffo and the Sanseverino, based in Calabria, and with the parchments of the Albertini from Nola. Thanks to the rich information derived by these archival series and account books, the authors bring new light on the seigneurial powers, the typology of the records produced by and for the Lords, the administration of their estates, the strategy for elaborating the family memory.

Il De bello Neapolitano di Giovanni Gioviano Pontano restò incompiuto alla sua morte, nel settembre del 1503. Incentrata sulla guerra di successione sostenuta da Ferrante contro Giovanni d’Angiò ed i baroni ribelli del Regno, l’opera s’inserisce nella produzione storiografica che fiorì alla corte della Napoli aragonese e che è stata di recente restituita al suo statuto ideologico e letterario. Oggetto di grande interesse per il suo valore documentario e storico-politico, oltre che per quello stilistico e letterario, essa è stata al centro di numerosi studi di varia matrice: certo, perché coi rapporti ideologici che la legano alla teoresi de lege historiae del dialogo Actius rappresenta il frutto maturo di un umanesimo che, avendo assorbito la lezione dei classici, ha sviluppato una propria autonomia critica e letteraria, ma soprattutto perché fu liberamente concepita da un intellettuale che rivestì un ruolo politico di rilievo nell’Italia del XV secolo e poté accedere a quelle documentazioni cancelleresche che ne sostanziano il metodo storiografico e la rendono moderna. Il De bello Neapolitano ci è stato tramandato nella copia di lavoro autografa del ms. Palat. Vindob. 3413 dell’Österreichische Nationalbibliothek di Vienna, che funse da originale di stampa per l’editio princeps dell’opera, curata da Pietro Summonte ed uscita a Napoli, per i tipi di Sigismondo Mayr, nel maggio del 1509. Sulla base dell’analisi dell’unica testimonianza autografa superstite dell’opera, la presente edizione si avvale del confronto con altre fonti letterarie e documentarie coeve sia per stabilirne un testo critico in linea coi moderni principi della filologia umanistica, sia per fornire i sussidi necessari a contestualizzarne la narrazione; ma si prefigge anche lo scopo di ricostruirne, fin dove possibile, la stratigrafia compositiva, con particolare attenzione ai ripensamenti di lingua e di stile, nonché ai rapporti con le possibili fonti antiche e moderne, letterarie e documentarie. Così, il testo critico è stato corredato di quattro fasce di apparato: nell’apparato sincronico trova luogo la registrazione delle varianti dovute agli interventi dell’editore primo Pietro Summonte; nell’apparato diacronico quella delle varianti d’autore che costituiscono la stratigrafia dell’autografo codice viennese; nell’apparato delle fonti e dei luoghi paralleli l’individuazione di alcune fra le possibili fonti linguistiche, stilistiche e letterarie della narrazione; nel commento storico sono raccolte – e spesso ricondotte alla loro genesi cancelleresca – le notizie utili ad illuminare testo e contesto storico, con informazioni su fatti, istituzioni, luoghi e personaggi, non senza chiarimenti su questioni politiche o diplomatiche. Il testo critico è preceduto da un’Introduzione che affronta gli aspetti della composizione, della cronologia e della tradizione dell’opera, nonché i caratteri dello statuto storiografico della sua narrazione, della lingua, dello stile e delle fonti che la sostanziano e la rendono, nonostante il suo stato d’incompiutezza, un vero classico del suo genere.
