1993 : Jean-Yves Empereur, directeur du Centre d'Études Alexandrines, équipe du CNRS basée à Alexandrie, découvre de pâles traces de peintures dans une tombe souterraine mise au jour un siècle auparavant. 1996 : le photographe André Pelle, utilisant la lumière utraviolette, révèle deux scènes superposées, qu'étudient et publient les archéologues Anne-Marie Guimier-Sorbets et Mervat Seif el-Din : la momification d'Osiris surplombant le mythe de l'enlèvement de Perséphone. 2012 : muni d'un appareil photo numérique, André Pelle redescend dans les catacombes et le traitement sur Photoshop de ses nouveaux clichés produit des images quasi magiques : les traits des personnages apparaissent avec netteté et même certaines couleurs. Dans ce premier volume de la nouvelle collection Antiquités Alexandrines, il présente les résultats subtils de son travail inédit sur ces scènes peintes, commentées avec science par Anne-Marie Guimier-Sorbets et Mervat Seif el-Din

Sommaire indiqué sur la jaquette : "In the Greco-Roman catacombs of Alexandria, uniquely decorated tombs from the time when religious boundaries blurred and syncretistic beliefs flourished have long been known. But it was only in 1993 that researchers, working under the auspices of the Centre d'Etudes Alexandrines, discovered faint traces of paintings on walls previously thought to be blank, or underneath other painted scenes: the hidden scenes could be partly made out and photographed using ultraviolet light. Then, in 2012, new computer technology was used to reveal the lost images-and colors-even more clearly.Here the team presents, examines, and interprets what it has found, teasing meaning and intent from the alternating scenes of Greek and Egyptian mythology, as employed by the citizens of a multicultural Alexandria at the beginning of the second century CE, in pursuit of a happy afterlife."
