Intrigerende snapshots van topfotograaf Anton Corbijn In Instanton presenteert de internationaal toonaangevende fotograaf en filmmaker Anton Corbijn een reeks voornamelijk nooit eerder gepubliceerd beeldmateriaal. Corbijn verwierf naam en faam door zijn portretten van onder anderen Tom Waits, The Rolling Stones, Marlene Dumas, Gerhard Richter, Clint Eastwood, Kate Moss en vele andere invloedrijke muzikanten, kunstenaars, filmmakers, modellen en ontwerpers. Maar Corbijn capteerde in de loop der jaren ook een reeks intrigerende snapshots met zijn mobiele telefoon. Instanton bundelt een ruime selectie momentopnamen uit zijn privéleven en beelden van onderweg. Publicatie met vijf verschillende manueel opgekleefde coverbeelden, geheel willekeurig verspreid over de volledige oplage.

Langverwachte monografie van videokunstenaar David Claerbout. In een gesprek met Jonathan Pouthier, filmcurator van het Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou (Parijs, Frankrijk), reflecteert videokunstenaar David Claerbout voor het eerst in de diepte over zijn werk van de afgelopen tien jaar in relatie tot actuele discussies over fotografie, film en het virtuele. The Silence of the Lens biedt een unieke inkijk in het maakproces van recente videowerken als The Close, Aircraft (F.A.L.), Wildfire (meditation on fire), The Confetti Piece en The Pure Necessity.

In deze publicatie toont Pélagie Gbaguidi (°1965) nieuwe schilderijen, werken met textiel en tekeningen. De kunstenares ziet zichzelf als een hedendaagse ‘griot’, iemand die het individuele geheugen en het voorouderlijke verleden met elkaar verbindt. Haar werk is een lezing van de tekenen en sporen van trauma en gaat de confrontatie aan met koloniale en postkoloniale geschiedenissen. Ze hercontextualiseert archieven en verhalen om het proces van vergeten te onthullen en tegen te gaan. De beelden die Gbaguidi creëert, via schilderijen, tekeningen, installaties of performance, bestrijden het binaire denken, archetypes en vereenvoudigingen.

A photographic journey into the dazzling past of a metropolis that never ceases to amaze. It is often said that you can’t do the same walk twice in New York. Its history may be short compared to that of European cities, but it is also a history marked by lightning-fast change. Thanks to the art of photography, we are able to see that fascinating history. This book takes the reader on an enchanted journey through time, from the small town that began as New Amsterdam in the seventeenth century, through the unbridled expansion and waves of mass immigration in the ensuing centuries, to the post-industrial metropolis that it was to become. Splendid historical photos make this book, with its elegant gilt-edged finish, a visual homage to the vibrant city that is New York today. Jacqueline Goossens and Tom Ronse are Belgian journalists and experienced city guides who have lived and worked in New York since 1980. Their stories about iconic locations and districts like Times Square, Harlem, Wall Street, Central Park, Ellis Island and the Bronx bring the past to life and help the reader to understand how they became what they are today. The metamorphoses of New York, the evolution of its architecture, infrastructure and art, are all described in illuminating detail. The lives of the city’s inhabitants, originating from every corner of the world, also receive ample attention. Writing from the authors’ own experiences lends the book a highly personal point of view.

Michel Buylen (Ghent, °1953) is a multi-faceted and headstrong painter, who never ceases to astonish with both his amazing virtuosity and his new take on centuries-old subjects; such as the nude, the child, the landscape, the sea as an obligate abstraction and the portrait as compromise and confrontation. Michel Buylen is anything but a conventional artist. Aided by acrylic, he succeeds in re-translating life, in all its diversity and nuances, enriching it with his own vision. Each new work forms a window to a sublimated reality, sometimes poetic and moving, often distant and surprising. It is this combination of vulnerable beauty and mysterious estrangement that gives Buylen a unique place within Belgium's contemporary art scene. Since 1992 Michel Buylen has been represented by Galerie De Zwarte Panter, Antwerp, and is a Member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Arts and Sciences, Class of the Arts.
