"Depuis le fond des âges, les Européens se sont forgé une vision originale de l'unité dans la diversité, une forme de conscience commune. Cette vision associe le goût grec de l'universalité, le sens romain du droit, la représentation judéo-chrétienne, mais aussi islamique, d'un Dieu-tout puissant et miséricordieux, ainsi que l'humanisme de la Renaissance et la raison des Lumières. L'histoire de la conscience européenne a été marquée également par une tension récurrente entre un attachement à l'État de droit et une vision impérialiste du monde. Les Européens ont recherché la distinction entre le pouvoir séculier et le pouvoir religieux, la participation des religions au bien public, la quête d'un système politique favorisant l'égalité des citoyens, une verticalité du pouvoir permettant de transcender les différences. Mais l'amour de la liberté des Européens s'est aussi accompagné de violences et d'un refus de l'altérité. La conscience européenne est caractérisée aussi par un sens de la créativité artistique et de la découverte scientifique. L'Européen est celui qui cherche à porter son regard toujours au-delà. Comme le raconte le mythe de l'enlèvement par Zeus de la princesse Europe à Tyr, l'Européen a tenu à se différencier de ses voisins tout en lui empruntant le meilleur.
