Nelson Goodman (1906-1998) was one of the outstanding thinkers of the 20th century. In a memorial note, Hilary Putnam considers him to be ""one of the two or three greatest analytic philosophers of the post-World War II period"". Biology and history are often viewed as closely related disciplines, with biology informed by history, especially in its task of charting our evolutionary past. Maximizing the opportunities for cross-fertilization in these two fields requires an accurate reckoning of their commonalities and differences—precisely what this volume sets out to achieve. Specially commissioned essays by a team of recognized international researchers cover the full panoply of topics in these fields and include notable contributions on the correlativity of evolutionary and historical explanations, applying to history the latest causal-mechanical approach in the philosophy of biology, and the question of generalized laws that might pertain across the two subjects.   The collection opens with a vital interrogation of general issues on explanation that apart from potentially fruitful areas of interaction (could the etiology of the causal-mechanical perspective in biology account for the historical trajectory of the Roman Empire?) this volume also seeks to chart relative certainties distinguishing explanations in biology and history. Der Band versammelt ausgewählte Arbeiten der Philosophin Rosemarie Rheinwald (1948-2009). Der Titel Logik, Kausalität, Freiheit deutet das breite Themenspektrum an: Es reicht von der Achilles-Paradoxie bis zum Problem der Willensfreiheit. Rheinwald wandte sich vorzugsweise schwierigen und grundlegenden Problemen zu: den logischen und semantischen Paradoxien, den Rätseln des induktiven Schließens und der Natur der Kausalität. Zu den frühen Forschungsinteressen in der Philosophie der Mathematik, der Logik und der Wissenschaftstheorie kamen im Laufe der Jahre Interessen in der Philosophie des Geistes, der Erkenntnistheorie und der Metaphysik hinzu. Jedem Aufsatz dieser Sammlung wurde eine kleine Einleitung eines Philosophen vorangestellt, der Rosemarie Rheinwald kannte und mit ihrer wissenschaftlichen Arbeit vertraut ist. Die Vorbemerkungen enthalten Hinweise zum Diskussionskontext und kritische Einwände ebenso wie persönliche Erinnerungen und Anmerkungen. Eine kommentierte Biblio - graphie am Ende des Bandes informiert über alle Veröffentlichungen – auch diejenigen, die nicht in diese Sammlung aufgenommen wurden. Die Nordrhein-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Künste ist eine Vereinigung der führenden Forscherinnen und Forscher des Landes. Sie wurde 1970 als Nachfolgeeinrichtung der Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Forschung des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen gegründet. Die Akademie ist in drei wissenschaftliche Klassen für Geisteswissenschaften, für Naturwissenschaften und Medizin sowie für Ingenieur- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften und in eine Klasse der Künste gegliedert.
