Abstract

What happens in globalised social contexts if people identify with a language that is not traditionally considered to be ‘their’ language? This unique contribution to the field of sociolinguistics scrutinises language ideologies of German and Australian Communities of Practice constituted by Salsa dance and asks what languages symbolise in transnational, non-ethnic cultures. Using ethnographic methodology and a deconstructive approach to language it examines these different Salsa communities and gives insight into the interaction of social discourses from local, national and transnational realms, examining differences, similarities and a simultaneous multiplicity of languages’ symbolic functions. This book will be welcomed by postgraduates, professional sociolinguists and linguistic anthropologists as well as scholars of cultural anthropology, sociology and cultural studies who are interested in the development of modernist categories in transnational culture.

Abstract

This book comprises a selection of 50 articles on Indian epigraphy and chronology written by Harry Falk and republished as facsimiles by his former colleagues and students on the occasion of his 65th birthday. The selected writings cover a period of almost two decades of Harry Falk’s scholarly activity at the Freie Universität Berlin. Most of the articles deal with inscribed objects dating to the early historical period inscribed in Kharoṣṭhī and Brāhmī. In many cases, the inscriptions are being published for the first time. Illustrations and photographs accompany most of the editions. The epigraphical studies are supplemented by Falk's innovative studies on Indian chronology. These introduce new perspectives on the early Indian eras such as those of Kaniṣka, Azes and the Yavanas. Comprehensive indices covering objects, names, places, words and general topics facilitate access to the contents. In addition, Harry Falk wrote an appendix in which he provides comments and corrections to his articles.

Abstract

"Divided into three volumes and edited by established scholars in the field, Bloomsbury World Englishes provides critical insights into aspects of the global uses and roles of English and their implications. The Paradigms volume analyzes the ways in which we make sense of the English as a global language, its many varieties and how these come into contact and mix with other languages. Its main goal is to move the field forward and beyond existing 'models' that begin to be unfit to describe English(es) in the era of globalization. The Ideologies volume explores the politics and economics of English as well as how the language has an impact on local societies and cultures. The chapters in the volume describe how English is often entangled in societal issues such as inequality, (de-)colonization, racism, oppression, liberation. The Pedagogies volume addresses one of the most important themes in World Englishes: the teaching of English as a world language. The chapters in this volume discuss the teaching and learning of English(es) from a range of perspectives and on the basis of experiences and research from many parts of the world"--

Abstract

The concept of authenticity has received some attention in recent academic discourse, yet it has often been left under-defined from a sociolinguistic perspective. This volume presents the contributions of a wide range of scholars who exchanged their views on the topic at a conference in Freiburg, Germany, in November 2011. The authors address three leading questions: What are the local meanings of authenticity embedded in large cultural and social structures? What is the meaning of linguistic authenticity in delocalised and/or deterritorialised settings? How is authenticity indexed in other contexts of language expression (e.g. in writing or in political discourse)? These questions are tackled by recognised experts in the fields of sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, and contact linguistics. While by no means exhaustive, the volume offers a large array of case studies that contribute significantly to our understanding of the meaning of authenticity in language production and perception.
