Abstract

"This book intends to offer a functional instrument for the exegesis of some of the unregulated norms of the 'Grammar of Legibility' - to use Malcom Parkes' lucky expression - and a point of departure for further research. Structured on the double track of 'texts' (Virgilian 'uolumina') and 'texts about texts' (Late Antique grammatical treatises), this survey focuses on the value of graphic accentuation signs. These signs are, actually, a way of reading in praxis, besides being graphematic units, in Latin papyrological documents, and they provide a direct expression of the textual performance and 'material' effect of grammatical precepts. In fact, there is a common denominator in all the sections 'de accentibus' and 'de distinctionibus' in the 'Artes': in scholarly and didactic contexts (in particular, in the eastern Empire), 'accentus' and 'distinctio' were not simply oral realities. They also had their completeness in a written dimension."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Abstract

Lying between the grammarians' and rhetors' domains, Aesop's fables were known and employed in the Western and Eastern educational environments mainly for their intrinsically moral essence. Once having explored the literary and grammatical texts concerning the educational role of fables, the book is focussed on the direct witnesses of Latin and bilingual Latin-Greek fables (III-IV AD) coming from the Eastern school environments, of which a new annotated edition is given. A relevant contribution is offered both: 1. to the complex and (almost) anonymous tradition of fables between the ancient Greek Aesop and the Medieval Latin Romulus, and through Phaedrus, Avian and the Hermeneumata Pseudodositheana; 2. and to the role fables played in the second-language (L2) acquisition and in teaching/learning Latin as L2 between East and West.

Abstract

Robert Marichal (1904-1999) was one of the most famous Latin paleographers of the Twentieth Century. His broad production is precious and well-known by scholars from all over the world, but his recently discovered Archive at the École Pratique des Hautes Études (Paris) offers a further and impressive contribution to the knowledge we have of ancient Latin texts, from Latin papyri from Herculaneum, to Latin ostraka from Northen Africa, and to Latin graffiti the ancient Latium and Campania.00This volume moves from the pioneer work on this Archive by the ERC project 'Platinum'. It collects eight papers from leading specialists and highlights how promising is the work on such an unpublished Archive.

Abstract

The refreshed insights into early-imperial Roman historiography this book offers are linked to a recent discovery. In the spring of 2014, the binders of the archive of Robert Marichal were dusted off by the ERC funded project PLATINUM (ERC-StG 2014 n°636983) in response to Tiziano Dorandi’s recollections of a series of unpublished notes on Latin texts on papyrus. Among these was an in-progress edition of the Latin rolls from Herculaneum, together with Marichal’s intuition that one of them had to be ascribed to a certain ‘Annaeus Seneca’. PLATINUM followed the unpublished intuition by Robert Marichal as one path of investigation in its own research and work. Working on the Latin P.Herc. 1067 led to confirm Marichal’s intuitions and to go beyond it: P.Herc. 1067 is the only extant direct witness to Seneca the Elder’s Historiae. Bringing a new and important chapter of Latin literature arise out of a charred papyrus is significant. The present volume is made up of two complementary sections, each of which contains seven contributions. They are in close dialogue with each other, as looking at the same literary matter from several points of view yields undeniable advantages and represents an innovative and fruitful step in Latin literary criticism. These two sections express the two different but interlinked axes along which the contributions were developed. On one side, the focus is on the starting point of the debate, namely the discovery of the papyrus roll transmitting the Historiae of Seneca the Elder and how such a discovery can be integrated with prior knowledge about this historiographical work. On the other side, there is a broader view on early-imperial Roman historiography, to which the new perspectives opened by the rediscovery of Seneca the Elder’s Historiae greatly contribute.

Abstract

Abstract

This volume is the first work devoted to the contacts between Latin and Coptic in late antique and Byzantine Egypt. It follows in the footsteps of a renewed interest in this multilingual and multicultural area, but it approaches an untapped theme aiming to show that it can profitably be explored. The papers examine different type of evidence on the basis of a multi-perspective approach. Some of them deal with wide-ranging issues, such as the presence of Latin in monastic or scholastic contexts alongside local varieties, some others deal with specific subjects, such as the use of Latin in a certain milieux or in specific documents. All papers show that the contact between languages, scripts and cultures took many forms depending on various factors.
