Abstract

Never Modern explores the role of narrative, history, and appropriation in the works of the London-based firm 6a Architects, whose recent projects include the South London Gallery, Raven Row, and the new fashion galleries at the Victoria and Albert Museum. It examines the unique approach of the members of 6a, wherein they avoid style and signature in favor of a pre-modern sense of metis, or “flair, wisdom, forethought, subtlety of mind, deception, resourcefulness, vigilance, opportunism, varied skills, and experience.” This analysis is accompanied by a striking visual essay of archival photographs, artworks, film stills, and recent projects by the firm. In the end, the book reveals that like contemporary society in general, the architecture of 6a Architects is fundamentally a work of bricolage, creating art composed of various objects on hand and drawing from history and the everyday to create something new and vital.

Abstract

This book, by architectural writer Irénée Scalbert, bears witness to some of the more significant developments in architecture during the last 25 years. The essays alternate between detailed studies of major buildings, written while these were being designed or as they were being rediscovered after a period of oblivion, and broader historical surveys that seek out the origin of contemporary architectural ideas. More than its extent, however, what distinguishes this writing is that it is the result of direct experience – of interviews with architects, clients, engineers and users, and of the pleasurable, at times rapturous, contemplation of architecture.

Abstract

Waking up to the idea of a post-growth society, Rotterdam Ripresa presents a city that aims to amend instead of renew, accepting not Just the pleasant past, but also the Impudent present. To find the new in the old may well be the most sustainable thing of all. Can a city change while remaining the same? Rotterdam Ripresa adopts an alternative method towards the production of striking visions for the city. An urbanism of fragmentary Intervention as a grand cadavre exquis where authorship is deluded rather than distilled. A collection of Future Fragments for the Neo Liberal City completing found ensembles that never were, but always could have been.

Abstract

Die wichtigsten Texte zu OMA / Rem Koolhaas The activities of Rem Koolhaas and his staff were widely discussed even before the foundation of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in 1975. Today, many contributions on the work of OMA can be found in the international architectural press, including Koolhaas' own writings. The book contains about 150 selected texts-interviews, feature articles, essays, lead articles, reviews, letters, introductions, appraisals, and competition reports that have been compiled for the first time. This compilation not only provides a fresh and critical view of the oeuvre of one the most important contemporary architects, but also represents an account of the debate on architectural and urban design in recent decades.
