Die Medialisierung ist ein zentraler Metatrend der gesellschaftlichen Modernisierung. Auch das Konzept der Mediengesellschaft bildet zunehmend den expliziten oder impliziten Fokus sozial- bzw. kommunikationswissenschaftlicher Arbeit. Allerdings fehlt nach wie vor eine konsistente Theoriebildung der Medialisierung und eine ganzheitliche, empirische Analyse der Mediengesellschaft. Diese Lücke will der Band zumindest verkleinern.
