Abstract

Ils vont de petits espaces ouverts aux camps de réfugiés, en passant par des villes entières, et jusqu'à de vastes régions : Addis Abeba, le camp d'Azraq, Beyrouth, Hong Kong, Inde, Mexique, Egypte, Nigeria, New-York, Pristina, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo et Venise Architecture shapes the monuments, the memories, and the expressions of societies and groups, creating a common language with which they debate and communicate their experiences and cultures." - Hashim Sarkis0For the Biennale Architettura 2021, in addition to the Exhibition Catalogue and the Short Guide, the curatorial team has put together two distinct volumes, entitled Expansions and Cohabitats, in order to further elaborate on the theme of 'How will we live together?.' These books will appeal to a wide range of readers both from architecture and art communities and beyond, to include anyone who is interested in the role that creative practice can play in collectively answering the complex challenges posed by today's unstable world.0Conceived as a record that delves deeper into a special section of the exhibition, Cohabitats comprises essays and visual material that look to the theme of the Biennale Architettura 2021 from the lens of a specific geographic location. While the main exhibition is primarily organised in five parts that contemplate a new spatial contract at five scales - as diverse beings, as new households, as emerging communities, across borders, and as one planet - this volume as well as the section of the show it is associated with, present analytical examples that speak to all five of them at once. The essays examine past and current practices of coming together in and around Venice, as well as in Addis Ababa, Beirut, India, Rio de Janeiro, Hong Kong, New York, Prishtina, and more.00Exhibition: Biennale Architettura 2021, Venice, Italy (22.05.-21.11.2021).

Abstract

Architects today are rethinking their tools to address the complex problems at hand. They are also enlarging their table to include around it other professionals and citizens. - Hashim Sarkis Expansions, edited by Hashim Sarkis and Ala Tannir, gathers over 80 responses to the question posed by the Biennale Architettura 2021's theme - How will we live together? These contributions act as an extension to the different thematics presented by participants in the galleries in Venice. Assembling the voices and views of authors from various fields associated with architecture - academics, curators, journalists, students, and more - this volume includes a collection of short essays that reveal recurring themes that are currently of interest to different architecture and design communities around the world. These include multispecies worlding, social and economic justice, the history of twentieth-century modern spatial practices, environmental concerns, public modes of transportation, as well as examinations and contestations of the digital/analog binary, among others. The graphic design and the layout of the volume are by Omnivore, Inc.

Abstract

The official catalog for the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia consists of two volumes: the first is dedicated to the International Exhibition curated by Hashim Sarkis and the second presents the National Participations and Collateral Events. "How will we live together?" is as much a social and political question as a spatial one: rapidly changing social norms, growing political polarization, climate change and vast global inequalities are making us ask it more urgently than before. In parallel, the weakness of today's political models compels us to look at how architecture shapes inhabitation and community. The architects invited to participate in the Biennale Architettura 2021 are encouraged to include other professions and constituencies--artists, builders and craftspeople, but also politicians, journalists, social scientists and everyday citizens. In effect, the Biennale asserts the vital role of the architect as both cordial convener and custodian of the spatial contract.

Abstract

Abstract

This book examines the emergence and evolution of the discipline of urban design as articulated through the work of Josep Lluis Sert (1902-1983), one of its most influential practitioners. Sert was noted for his city planning and urban development projects in Europe, South America, and the United States, and the master plans of his later career were significant for their integration of natural landscape features into the urban building scheme. With essays by leading scholars and a wide selection of archival materials, illustrations, plans, and maps, this book provides a timely look at the man who advocated the idea ofan urban consciousness and an architecture that dealt with the total environment--well before these concepts became commonplace.

Abstract

"The world's growing vulnerability to large scale risks is prompting action at the global scale. This book proposes that architects have played an under recognized but important role in imagining the future of the planet through world-scale projects, while examining the institutional and political scenarios that would make this possible. In so doing, they've reflected on the planetary repercussions wrought of diverse political, social, technological and environmental currents. Rather than indulging in the cliché of the megalomaniac architect, this book aims to presents a discipline reflecting on its own responsibilities, in which geographic and holistic considerations inform ethical and aesthetical positions. From Le Corbusier to Buckminster Fuller from Zaha Hadid to Super Studio and Design Earth, it provides a historical reference of 50 speculative projects from 1882 to the present. The book is the first compilation of its kind, as well as a critical reflection on the world as an architectural project. Curiously, architects have undertaken the world as a project before the advent of contemporary globalization and its associated risks. Their 'ecumenal' aspirations date back to the 19th century. While these visions may not resemble what globalization has produced in terms of physical environment, some tend to be anticipatorily critical of the inequalities it would eventually generate, and of the morass that urbanization would bring about. Some others caution against mistaking imagining the world as a totality for controlling it as such, while they stress the need for an architectural vocabulary to make it legible. The book shows how the world has been a rich domain for the modern architectural imaginary. It is also an invitation to reclaim the scale and challenges of the world, the whole world, as a vital architectural project"--

Abstract

This first monograph from New York-based Young Projects explores a new approach to spatial design that combines digital and analog methods at the intersection of exploration and architecture. This monograph introduces the cutting-edge research and work of Young Projects, founded by Bryan Young, where materiality, structure, and form intersect to generate new architectural typologies. The book presents a selection of the practice’s most relevant projects: five innovative houses completed between 2015 and 2020 as well as less in-depth looks at other projects that define the practice. Each house serves as a chapter through which Young Projects’ broader body of work is explored across scales, illustrated through a rich landscape of drawings, diagrams, renderings, mock-ups, prototypes, and photography. The through-line connecting all chapters is the studio’s interest in using ambiguity and anomaly to create novel and accessible spaces, whether for high profile clients like Heidi Klum or a new resort in St Kitts. Young Projects seeks to draw users into immersive spatial experiences that unfold over time, in a manner that is familiar but subtly foreign. This quality of “allure” is a result of a unique and experimental approach to materiality and spatial legibility. These are the threads that tie the work together and have set Young Projects apart as an emerging practice, as well as inform the larger-scale projects the studio undertakes as it enters its second decade. Young Projects’ process often begins with simple exercises in making: form-finding experiments they undertake within their Brooklyn studio. Material research has included hand-pulling plaster with an irregular knife, using furniture foam as a casting bed, and forming concrete with palm stems. These experiments, among many others, mine characteristics that are not typically associated with conventional architectural materials and break traditional methodology, allowing for qualities of randomness and spontaneity to enter the process of making. The studio finds that letting go of control (at the right moments) produces results that are often surprising, entirely bespoke, and resist replication.
