This book contains a selection of papers presented in a subsection on translation process analysis at the II Brazilian International Translators' Forum, held on 23-27 July 2001. The volume builds on the notion of triangulation, i.e., the combined use of different methods of data elicitation and analyses, to discuss methodological issues and actual experimental methods in the field of translation process research. Grouped in three parts, the seven contributions raise issues concerned, among others, with the translation-pragmatics interface, the role of inter-subjectivity, the attempts at modeling what accounts for translation competence, and the effect of think-aloud on translation speed, revision, and segmentation. The volume also examines the process of translation in terms of relevant measurements which can validate some of the instruments used in the triangulation approach and fosters the application of triangulation as a pedagogical instrument to be applied to translators' training. The book will certainly find an audience among translation scholars doing experimental work and students and practitioners interested in capturing the translation process.

"Fabio Luis Barbosa dos Santos delves into the history of South America to understand the rise and fall of the so-called 'progressive governments'. In the wake of mobilizations against neoliberalism in the 1990s, most countries elected presidents identified with change. However, less than twenty years after Hugo Chávez's victory, this trend seems to be reversed. The times of Lula are now Bolsonaro's. What happened? Supported by an extensive bibliography and hundreds of interviews, the author addresses each South American country, including those who did not elect progressives, in addition to Cuba. The national focus is enriched by an analysis of regional integration attempts, providing a detailed and necessary recent history of the subcontinent. Originally published in Portuguese as Uma história da onda progressista sul-americana (1998-2016) by Elefante, São Paulo, 2018.

This book discusses five cases of hatred politics on the margins of global capital: Turkey under Erdogan (assumed office in 2003), Hungary under Orbán (assumed office in 2010), India under Modi (assumed office in 2014); the Philippines under Duterte (assumed office in 2016) and Brazil under Bolsonaro (assumed office in 2019). How did they come to power? What strategies of legitimation do they employ? What resistances do they face? Country case studies lay the foundation for a systematic comparison that illuminates the key dynamics of this novel political form. Analyses of their responses to the Covid-19 pandemic further shed light on their methods in a time of crisis and a chapter that considers the Trump presidency indicates how we can understand these leaderships given their pronounced counterpart in the Global North – and vice-versa. This is not a mere collection of texts commissioned from specialists, but the result of a two-year-long collective endeavor: an international taskforce to respond to a global phenomenon. Contributors are : Fabio Luis Barbosa dos Santos, Daniel Feldmann, Ágnes Gagyi, Daniel Geary, Tamás Gerőcs, Sefika Kumral, Cecilia Lero, Devika Misra, Ilhan Can Ozen and Aparna Sundar.

The most common and established way of performing experimental modal analysis is to use acceleration based transducers that lead to the calculation of the displacement mode shapes. However, the use of strain measurements for use in experimental modal analysis has gained a lot of popularity in the last couple of years. Not only there are applications where the use of strain measurements makes for a more attractive and interesting option, such as structural health monitoring methods, but there are also applications where sensor size and placement might be critical and therefore strain sensors are the most eligible candidate. This thesis has as the main focus of research the use of strain sensors for experimental modal analysis. In this sense, experimental methodologies and improvements on the current ways of carrying out strain modal analysis are presented, paying particular attention to the relationship between strain and displacement modes. This study of the strain displacement relationship led to the development of a scaling methodology for strain modes and is used to demonstrate the presence of reciprocity under certain conditions. Overall, there are many experimental cases presented in this work, with the main objective of not only validating the theoretical aspects presented in the thesis, but also to provide guidance through the many steps and difficulties associated with experimental strain modal analysis.
