Le 5 octobre 1864, un violent cyclone s'abat sur la plaine du Gange. Calcutta, capitale de l'Empire britannique en Inde, est dévastée. «Le jardin botanique de Calcutta figure désormais parmi les choses du passé», lit-on dans le Gardener's Chronicle. Trois décennies plus tard, le jardin était pourtant devenu l'un des plus éminents symboles de l'Empire britannique. Les visiteurs affluaient pour admirer un arbre immense à l'allure de forêt: le grand banian. Son herbier, riche de milliers de spécimens venus de tous les territoires impériaux, en faisait un haut lieu de la classification botanique. Ses directeurs étaient tenus de contribuer à l'essor économique du Raj en tentant d'acclimater de nouvelles espèces et d'améliorer le rendement des récoltes. Ses responsables en écrivaient l'histoire comme celle d'un lieu colonial modèle qui servait la mission civilisatrice de l'empire. Ce livre étudie le rôle à la fois symbolique et économique qu'a joué le jardin botanique de Calcutta dans le dispositif d'un empire alors à son apogée.
