"This guide to modern Arabic literature in English translation features not only a comprehensive bibliography but also chapters on fiction, drama, poetry and autobiography. Altoma assesses the progress made towards a wider reception of Arabic writing throughout the Anglophone world, with particular emphasis on Naguib Mahfouz, one of Arabic literature's luminaries, and on poetry. Modern Arabic Literature in Translation is a tool for research and teaching - in the West, certainly, but also in the Arab world, where the translation of Arabic literature into other languages has been of considerable concern for more than a century."--Jacket.

In this political biography, Ilan Pappe traces the rise of the Husayni family of Jerusalem, who dominated Palestinian history from the early 1700s until the second half of the twentieth century. Viewing this sweeping saga through the prism of one family, the book sheds new light on crucial events - the invasion of Palestine by Napoleon, the decline of the Ottoman Empire, World War I, western colonialism, and the advent of Zionism - and provides an unforgettable picture of the Palestinian tragedy in its entirety. The Rise and Fall of a Palestinian Dynasty is the history of Palestinian politics before national movements and political parties. In telling the story of one family, the book highlights the continuity between periods customarily divided into pre-modern and modern, pre-Zionist and Zionist, illuminating history as it was actually lived. -- Book jacket.

Between July 1920 and February 1921, in the territory known as Mesopotamia--now the modern state of Iraq--an Arab uprising came perilously close to inflicting a shattering defeat upon the British Empire. A huge peasant army led by Shi'i clerics, Baghdad notables, disaffected sheikhs and former Ottoman army officers surrounded and besieged British garrisons with sandbagged entrenchments; British columns and armoured trains were ambushed and destroyed; and well-armed British gunboats were sunk or captured. The quest for oil was central to Britain's Middle East policy during the First World War and was one of the principal reasons for its continuing occupation of Iraq. However, with around 131,000 Arabs in arms at one stage of the conflict, the British were very nearly driven out. Only a massive infusion of Indian troops and the widespread use of aircraft prevented a total rout. This book is the history of the first British occupation of Iraq and the revolt against it in 1920--the most serious armed uprising against British rule int eh twentieth century. Using a wealth of primary sources, author Ian Rutledge brings central players such as Winston Churchill, Arnold Wilson, T.E. Lawrence, Gertrude Bell and Sit Mark Sykes vividly to life in this gripping account.

This volume provides a practical yet comprehensive guide to manage the shift in the diagnosis of lung cancer from large resections to small samples, including cytology specimens and core biopsies. Specifically, it outlines various available minimally-invasive modalities and presents algorithms to optimize and maximize sample collection and processing beginning at the time of tissue acquisition during the procedure. Secondly, the book provides an overview of the various existing and emerging lung cancer therapies and why a specific diagnosis is crucial. Key elements for the classification of small biopsies and cytology proposed by the ATS, IASLC, and ERS are highlighted. A section dedicated to immunohistochemistry offers a logical, step-by-step guide to sub-classify lung cancers and to differentiate them from metastases. The text also provides a review of the various molecular tests (and alternatives in cases of scant tissue) required for lung adenocarcinomas. Finally, potential pitfalls to avoid during acquisition, processing, and classification are discussed. With contributions from a team of multidisciplinary authors who are regularly involved in the care of lung cancer patients , Diagnosing Non-small Cell Carcinoma in Small Biopsy and Cytology is an invaluable reference guide for pathologists, pathologists-in-training, and allied professionals, including oncologists, pulmonologists, surgeons, and radiologists.
