Abstract

"This classic handbook for naturalists, students, and marine biologists has now been thoroughly updated in a new revised edition. Over the last twenty years, this has become the go-to reference for all those working in the field of marine biology, enabling rapid identification of all but the rarest species of benthic invertebrates and fish encountered around the shores of north-west Europe. It covers 1500 species from all major marine groups, includes occurrence and distribution for each species, provides user-friendly identification keys, and is illustrated throughout by more than 2000 high quality line drawings. [It also] provides an accessible and synoptic account of the marine fauna of north-west Europe, assisted by proven identification keys and clear line illustrations; incorporates the latest revisions to systematic groups; [and made] improvements ... to text and keys [which] will facilitate student tuition. The 'Handbook of the marine fauna of north-west Europe' is suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in marine ecology (particularly useful for fieldwork) as well as the many professional marine biologists, environmental scientists, and conservation biologists requiring a concise but authoritative overview of the topic of surveys, censures, and consultancy work."--Back cover.

Abstract

Hayward and Ryland's Marine Fauna of the British Isles and North-West Europe has become a classic in the marine reference literature. The same editors have now prepared a shorter version suitable for individual purchase and field use. Rapid and easy identification of all but the rarest of the marine animals found on the sea shores and shallow sublittoral zones of north-west Europe is made possible by the provision of simple dichotomous keys, individual descriptions, and high quality line and stipple drawings. The occurrence and distribution is given for each species, and reference provided to the specialist literature which will facilitate more detailed study and coverage of the additional, rare species not covered in the book.
