This landmark work presents the most illuminating portrait we have to date of goddesses and sacred female imagery in Western culture--from prehistory to contemporary goddess movements. Beautifully written, lucidly conceived, and far-ranging in its implications, this work will help readers gain a better appreciation of the complexity of the social forces-- mostly androcentric--that have shaped the symbolism of the sacred feminine. At the same time, it charts a new direction for finding a truly egalitarian vision of God and human relations through a feminist-ecological spirituality. Rosemary Radford Ruether begins her exploration of the divine feminine with an analysis of prehistoric archaeology that challenges the popular idea that, until their overthrow by male-dominated monotheism, many ancient societies were matriarchal in structure, governed by a feminine divinity and existing in harmony with nature. For Ruether, the historical evidence suggests the reality about these societies is much more complex. She goes on to consider key myths and rituals from Sumerian, Babylonian, Egyptian, and Anatolian cultures; to examine the relationships among gender, deity, and nature in the Hebrew religion; and to discuss the development of Mariology and female mysticism in medieval Catholicism, and the continuation of Wisdom mysticism in Protestanism. She also gives a provocative analysis of the meeting of Aztec and Christian female symbols in Mexico and of today's neo-pagan movements in the United States.

Beginning with the Jewish and Roman families of antiquity, Ruether shows that the anti-family traditions of the gospels and early Christianity can be understood as a critique of oppressive forms of family. But Christianity later defined and relied upon family life as it grew into a stable social force. Taking us up to the present, Ruether examines how contemporary claims on the family-from same-sex marriage to feminism to the fragmentation of Christianity-shape the way Christians respond to and resist new definitions of private life. Finally, she argues convincingly for a way religion can accommodate the needs of believers without interference from the state, and how Christianity-always fluid and ever-evolving-can satisfy its role to its adherents without compromising its importance as a source of spiritual resilience. [publisher's description] How did a religion founded on the loosening of earthly ties come to extol the virtues of the traditional family? In this history of the relationship between Christianity and the family, Rosemary Radford Ruether traces the development of these centerpieces of modern life to reveal the misconceptions at the heart of the "family values" debate.

From the earliest interactions of Christians with the Roman Empire to today's debates about the separation of church and state, the Christian churches have been in complex relationships with various economic and political systems for centuries. Renowned theologian Rosemary Radford Ruether analyzes the ways the Christian church has historically interacted with powerful systems such as patriarchy, racism, slavery, and environmentalism, while looking critically at how the church shapes these systems today. With a focus on the United States, Christianity and Social Systems provides an introductory analysis of the interactions between the churches and major systems that have shaped western Christian and post-Christian society. Ruether discusses ideologies, such as liberalism and socialism, and includes three country case studies-Nicaragua, South Africa, and North and South Korea-to further illustrate the profound influences Christianity and social systems have with each other. This book is neither an attack on the relationship between Christianity and these systems, nor an apology, but rather a nuanced examination of the interactions between them. By understanding how these interactions have shaped history, we can more fully understand how to make ethical decisions about the role of Christianity in some of today's most pressing social issues, from economic and class disparities to the environmental crisis.

America, Amerikkka traces the historical and ideological patterns of the U.S. American view of themselves as an elect nation inhabiting a ""promised land"" and enjoying a uniquely favored relation with God and a mission to spread ""redemption"" qua ""democracy"" throughout the world. This view of unique election has been coupled racial exclusivism privileging and marginalizing non-whites as citizens of the nation. In the 18th and 19th centuries a doctrine of the ""rights of man"" excluded the two primary non-white groups present in the territory, Native Americans and Africans. Manifest Destiny
