"The Long Sixties (1955-1973) were a period of economic prosperity, political unrest, sexual liberation, cultural experimentation, and profound religious innovation throughout the Western world. This social effervescence also affected the study of religion by reshaping the relationships between academic and religious institutions and discourses. While the mainstream churches sought to deploy the instruments of the social sciences to understand and manage the changing socioreligious context, prominent scholars regarded the bubbly spirituality of the counterculture as the harbinger of a new era; some of them actively used their academic knowledge to further this revolution. This book discusses the multiple entanglements of religion and science during these turbulent decades through theoretically informed case studies from both sides of the Atlantic"--

In the last few decades, the organization of religious education classes in Swiss public school has been the object of profound public scrutiny. In the wake of these debates, most cantons have introduced a new course under the responsibility of the State in which a plurality of religions is presented. The attribution of this new competence to the State has prompted the reaction of various religious communities and has stimulated, within these communities, a reflection on their social role. Drawing on forty in-depth interviews with representatives of different religious communities, this study analyzes the strategies used by religious actors to position themselves in the public sphere. Against this backdrop, the study discusses the evolution of the relationships between religious communities and society and puts forward new perspectives in the sociological debate on the public presence of religion.

In this open access book, Andrea Rota makes the case for philosophical, theoretical, and empirical approaches to the study of religion, drawing on ongoing debates and challenging individualist perspectives. Rota begins with a survey of the work of Michael Bratman, John Searle, Raimo Tuomela, and Margaret Gilbert exploring the relevance of their insights for the study of religion. He sets out a theoretical framework to operationalize their philosophical ideas in an empirical research setting. Applying this framework in Part Two, Rota analyses the collective agency of Jehovah's Witnesses, focusing on the roles that print and electronic media play in structuring communicative processes that conduce to collective intentions and commitments. He presents extensive fieldwork carried out in Switzerland and Germany, examining both qualitative and quantitative data. By demonstrating the fruitfulness of philosophical perspectives on collective intentionality and social ontology, Rota's study makes a timely contribution to our understanding of the beliefs, emotions, and aesthetic experiences of religious groups. The eBook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

Sous la poussée de la sécularisation et de la pluralisation, l'Etat a mis en place de nouveaux modèles d'instruction religieuse. Les réactions des diverses communautés religieuses sont analysées à travers des entretiens avec leurs représentants." (source : Electre).
