Abstract

Abstract

Flanders has had a Government Architect since 1999. The Government Architect advises public commissioning authorities with the aim of promoting the quality of architecture and the built environment. One of the methods used for this purpose is the Open Call. In the essays in this book, eight authors discuss, from different perspectives, why this influential ‘competition’ is not quite an architecture competition while at the same time being much more. Did architectural criticism in the 1990s help to pave the way for the Government Architect position and the Open Call? Does the key to quality lie in smart procedures? What is a ‘strong’ public commissioner in a democratic system? What does the Flemish Government Architect do and what has the Open Call achieved over the past twenty years? What do the distinct projects mean in their broader spatial context? Can architects satisfy a collective desire with singular designs? To what extent is the Open Call in line with the broadening of the practice of architecture and the evolving competition culture? Looking back on two decades of public commissions, this book presents current reflections on these issues.

Abstract

Abstract

On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the Flanders Architecture Institute initiated a creative reflection on VAi and the developments in the field of architecture over the last two decades. In collaboration with Harold Fallon (AgwA & KU Leuven), the topic is tackled from past inspirations, to the present situation of architectural culture and the possible future directions of VAi and architecture in a wider scope. The Pamphlet Twenty Years of Flanders Architecture Institute is the result of a chainmail with 33 correspondents and contains textual and visual materials. Under the guidance of architect and professor Harold Fallon (AgwA & KU Leuven) the Flanders Architecture Institute launched a chainmail in 2021 as to study the architectural culture from various perspectives. The 33 correspondences were compiled in a pamphlet.

Abstract

The Pastoor van Ars Church that was built in 1969 by Aldo van Eyck in The Hague is one of the few significant church buildings to emerge from the second half of the twentieth century. This book sheds light on the unique architectural and spatial qualities of the building. Although not a Catholic believer himself, Van Eyck endeavoured to realize an authentic and contemporary Catholic church building. To this end, he went back to the original typology of the early Christian basilica, whose components he incorporated into the new conception of space put forward by the twentieth-century avant-garde, in particular the dynamic order of Mondrian and the archetypes of Brancusi. The author, who previously wrote an extensive monograph on the ideas and work of the Dutch architect, pays particular attention to the intensive design process, which he has reconstructed using more than a hundred design sketches from the Van Eyck archive.

Abstract

The versatile Anna Boch (1848–1936) was not only a talented artist, but also a highly knowledgeable collector, generous patron, and enthusiastic traveler with a great love of music and architecture. She was the only woman to become a member of the prominent art societies Les XX and La Libre Esthétique, and she was treated as an equal by her fellow artists. Inspired by kindred spirits including Théo van Rysselberghe, Paul Signac and Georges Seurat, Anna Boch set about developing her own personal version of Neo-Impressionism. Anna Boch’s lucid paintings chart her search for line and color. Her passion for nature took her to remote destinations and imbued her with dreams of beautiful bucolic landscapes that she wanted to interpret. She loved the sea and succeeded in capturing the light and its reflection upon the coast with unparalleled skill, translating it into intriguing but above all timeless compositions. This book presents her oeuvre with more than 100 works, and resolutely claims a place for Anna Boch in the art history of the 19th and 20th centuries.
