Sculpture of the Luba peoples of south-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is among Africa's most magnificent forms of expression. An aesthetic suggesting calm dignity through harmonious forms transcends cultures and time. But what is "beauty" to Luba themselves? 

In this book, Luba people explain how beauty is as beauty does: works of art must work to protect, promote, and heal individuals and communities, much as sacred icons do in world religions like Christianity. Central to Luba artistry is the lukasa, a seemingly simple but extraordinarily sophisticated device that aids memory and the making of histories. Stools, staffs, figures, and complex choreographies complement the lukasa as Luba culture is remebered, produced, and transformed, even during recent civil unrest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
