David S. Riley’s interest in the history, methodology and results of homeopathic drug provings began with his exposure to homeopathy in 1988 and his later study at the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy in Albany, California. These homeopathic drug provings are the result of his investigation of the research methods associated with homeopathic drug provings and contemporary research methodology. Dr. Riley has developed explicit and transparent research tools for (1) symptom selection criteria, (2) electronic data collection, and (3) blinding to reduce bias. These homeopathic drugs provings follow good clinical practice research guidelines (GCP) and incorporate the guidelines suggested by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann more than 200 years ago.

Materia Medica of New and Old Homeopathic Medicines David S. Riley's interest in the research and subsequently the history and methodology of homeopathic drug provings began with his medical school training in 1979 and a residency in Internal Medicine. He was exposed to homeopathy in 1988 followed by study at the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy in Albany, California. He has investigated the interplay between contemporary research methods and the research methods associated with homeopathic drug provings. Dr Riley has developed research tools for data collection, symptom selection criteria and blinding; primarily to address the risk of bias. The homeopathic drug provings published here are the result of this work. For the 3rd edition twelve homeopathic drug provings, conducted by a number of internationally renowned proving directors, have been added. These homeopathic drug provings all follow good clinical practice (GCP) research guidelines and incorporate the guidelines suggested by Dr Samuel Hahnemann more than 200 years ago.

David Riley's interest in the history, methodology, and results of homeopathic drug provings came from his study of homeopathy at the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy in Albany, California.  The 69 drug homeopathic drug provings published here, are the result of his investigation of the research methods of homeopathic drug provings that forms part of the basis for prescribing in homeopathy.  In Dr. Hahnemann's time the method by which the treatment profiles of homeopathic remedies were determined were called provings, after the original German word Prüfung, which means "test". Scientific research methods have evolved from the early days of homeopathy and Dr. Riley, in an attempt to improve transparency and reduce bias, has incorporated elements of contemporary research methods such as randomization, blinding, and formal good clinical practice guidelines (GCP) into homeopathic drug provings, while adhering to the general guidelines suggested by Dr. Hahnemann and used by homeopathic practitioners and researchers around the world.
