Satz des Pythagoras, Seelenwanderung, Vegetarismus - das sind nur drei, und längst nicht alle Schlagwörter, welche die Lehre des vielleicht einflußreichsten Denkers der griechischen Philosophie vor Platon charakterisieren. Christoph Riedweg umreißt in seiner Einführung präzise Pythagoras' Beitrag zur Grundlegung der europäischen Kultur. Nach Pythagoras von Samos ist einer der wichtigsten Sätze der Mathematik benannt. Doch der griechische Weise (ca. 570 - 480 v. Chr.) hat mehr zu bieten als mathematische Formeln. Klänge soll er in Zahlen formuliert und auf den Kosmos übertragen haben ("Sphärenharmonie"), die Seelenwanderung soll er gelehrt und demzufolge vom Fleischverzehr abgeraten haben. Angeblich stammt von ihm das Wort "Philosophie". Seine Zahlenphilosophie und seine kosmologischen Spekulationen kursierten als Geheimlehren unter seinen Schülern, die als sektenartiger Geheimbund organisiert waren. Um im Dickicht der komplexen Überlieferung zum historischen Kern dieser schille rnden Figur vorzudringen, wertet Christoph Riedweg in seinem Buch nicht nur die schriftlichen Zeugnisse aus, sondern berücksichtigt auch das geistes- und kulturgeschichtliche Umfeld. Der Leser erhält einen anschaulichen Überblick über Leben und Lehre des griechischen Denkers und seiner bedeutendsten Schüler.

One of the most important mathematical theorems is named after Pythagoras of Samos, but this semi-mythical Greek sage has more to offer than formulas. He is said to have discovered the numerical nature of the basic consonances and transposed the musical proportions to the cosmos, postulating a "harmony of the spheres." He may have coined the words "cosmos" and "philosophy." He is also believed to have taught the doctrine of transmigration of souls and therefore to have advised a vegetarian diet.Ancient legends have Pythagoras conversing with dogs, bears, and bulls. A distinctly Pythagorean way of life, including detailed ritual regulations, was observed by his disciples, who were organized as a secret society. Later, Pythagorean and Platonic teachings became fused. Pythagore hante l'imagination contemporaine, sans représenter toutefois bien plus qu'un nom associé à des découvertes mathématiques. Pourtant, pour les anciens, Pythagore faisait partie des sages incontournables. Il aurait même inventé le mot "philosophie" . Dans cette étude précise et accessible, Christoph Riedweg retrace les contours possibles de cette figure entourée de légendes et de récits accumulés tout au long de l'Antiquité.Il dégage ainsi les traits probables de sa personnalité, les composantes de sa pensée comme celle de ses successeurs et brosse un portrait de la secte qu'il fonda en Italie du Sud dans le dernier tiers du VIe siècle av. J. -C.
