Abstract

"Claude Cahun, Maya Deren, and Cindy Sherman were born in different countries, in different generations - Cahun in France in 1894, Deren in Russia in 1917, and Sherman in the United States in 1954. Yet they share a deeply theatrical obsession that shatters any notion of a unified self. All three try out identities from different social classes and geographic environments, extend their temporal range into the past and future, and transform themselves into heroes and villains, mythological creatures, and sex goddesses. The premise of Inverted Odysseys is that this expanded concept of the self - this playful urge to "try on" other roles - is more than a feminist or psychological issue. It is central to our global culture, to our definition of human identity in a world where the individual exists in a multicultural and multemporal environment. This book is an "odyssey" through historical, theoretical, critical, and literary perspectives on the three artists viewed in the context of these issues."--Jacket.

Abstract

During the Second Empire (1852-1870), Baron Haussmann and Emperor Napoleon III reconstructed Paris into the "City of Light" we know today. The government and other public institutions commissioned many photographers - among them Charles Marville, Henri Le Secq, Edouard-Denis Baldus, and Gustave Le Gray - to record the old Parisian architecture and to document the demolition and reconstruction. In Parisian Views, Shelley Rice explores not only the literal connections between photography and the transformation of Paris but also the metaphorical ones. Each of the book's essays is in itself a "Parisian view." The fragmented, layered quality of the text allows the author to avoid making a linear narrative out of a subject that is enriched by multiple perspectives. Yet all of the essays revolve around a central theme: the creation of modern urban space, in both two and three dimensions, and the impact of this space on the lives of those who walked the streets of Paris of the nineteenth century.

Abstract

Rio' consists of a slipcase containing the work of two photographers who portray Rio de Janeiro in a visual dialogue spanning different centuries. Book one showcases 19th-century photographer Marc Ferrez’s classical work on the city where he was born and spent his life and five-decade career, from the mid-1860s to the early 1910s. Ferrez's complete archives of glass plates and vintage prints are today housed at the Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS) in Rio de Janeiro and have been scanned anew for this edition.0Book two presents a project developed by IMS with Robert Polidori over the past five years, for which Polidori extensively photographed Rio, emphasizing its contemporary dynamic and dense urban configuration. Polidori contextualizes today's Rio within the natural settings from which the city grew, and which have defined its iconic international profile throughout history. This tension between the natural and built environments, also significant in Ferrez's work, is a defining reference for Rio's inhabitants and shapes both their past and present cultures.
