Diatoms from some marine, brackish and freshwater biotopes or Guinea (West Africa). 'This paper presents a preliminary list of the diatom flora from Guinea. Marine, brackish and freshwater sampling was conducted in ten sites, mainly in the vicinity of Conakry. The diatom flora consisted of 176 taxa (34 centric and 142 pennate) of which 90 can be considered as freshwater organisms whereas 86 are rather marine or brackish. Most of these taxa are reported for the first time from Guinea. Some rare or interesting taxa are illustrated in light and scanning electron microscopy. A new combination, Achnantidium minutissimum (Kütz.) Czarnecki f. inconspicuum (Ostrup) Compère & Riaux-Gobin, is proposed.

Light (LM) and scanning electron (SEM) microscope observations of Vikingea gibbocalyx (Brun) Witkowski, Lange-Bertalot et Metzeltin, from coral sands off Reunion (Indian Ocean), are presented. The species is illustrated with a particular focus on new, or previously poorly documented, , morphological details such as the raised external ridges, the structure of the girdle and the structure of the areolae with typical disc-like coverings. In the middle of the valve, near the margin, two central-marginal circular structures are observed. The fine architecture of the central-marginal circular structures and the areolae are examined. The biogeography of the taxon is discussed taking into account all observations in the literature
