Abstract

The book presents risk management from an engineering perspective. Both a systemic and analytic viewpoint are important in this regard. The introduction to the concept of 'risk' is followed by risk management principles, risk diagnostic, analysis and treatment, event analysis, crisis management, economic issues, risk governance followed by examples of practical implementation in chemistry, physics and emerging technologies such as nanoparticles. Finally, also a number of well-known major industrial accidents are discussed, and how one can learn from accidents. The book is aimed at anyone faced with risk and safety issues. The target audience can be as diverse as students, engineers, scientists, sociologists, psychologists, or actually all practitioners and academics interested in the matter.

Abstract

This revised and updated 3rd edition of Engineering Risk Management (ERM) presents an understanding and insights into what risk is, what constitutes it and how to interpret the building blocks of the concept. The book also elaborates on the differences between safety and security, and risk management metaphors. Models, theories and principles are discussed, as well as risk assessment methods, risk treatment, risk resilience and micro-economic approaches to optimizing risk decision-making. Some iconic major accidents are explained, followed by examples of practical implementation of ERM in chemistry, physics, and nanotechnology.

Abstract

Domino Effects in the Process Industries discusses state-of-the-art theories, conceptual models, insights and practical issues surrounding large-scale knock-on accidents-so-called domino effects-in the chemical and process industries. The book treats such extremely low-frequency phenomena from a technological perspective, studying possible causes and introducing several approaches to assess and control the risks of these scenarios. The authors also examine these events from a managerial viewpoint, discussing single and multi-plant management insights and requirements to take pro-active

Abstract

"This book examines the possibility of socially responsible innovation in security, using an interdisciplinary approach. Responsible innovation in security refers to a comprehensive approach that aims to integrate knowledge related to stakeholders operating at both the demand and the supply side of security - technologists, citizens, policymakers and ethicists. Security innovations can only be successful in the long term if all the social, ethical and ecological impacts, threats and opportunities, both short term and long term, are assessed and prioritized alongside technical and commercial impacts. The first part of this volume focuses on security technology innovation and its perception and acceptance by the public, while the second part delves deeper into the processes of decision-making and democratic control, raising questions on the ethical implications of security ruling. This book will be of much interest to students of critical security studies, sociology, technology studies and IR in general"--
