Ondanks de grotere toegankelijkheid van het hoger onderwijs, met onder meer een grotere toestroom van meisjes, plaatsen de auteurs kanttekeningen bij deze evolutie. Zij menen dat er nieuwe vormen van ongelijkheid opduiken. Ongelijkheid die terug te voeren is tot de sociale klasse waaruit de student, mannelijk of vrouwelijk, afkomstig is. Met name de keuze voor welk soort hoger onderwijs of welke hogeschool/universiteit wordt gekozen, hangt daarmee samen.
