The book covers contemporary environmental issues related to such subjects such as: drinking water, air pollution, waste water, hazardous waste and groundwater, and it focusses on current research activities, emerging technologies and future trends. For each major topic area, an overview paper covers the current state of the technology. The individual papers were independently reviewed by scientists and engineers knowledgeable in the field and complemented by summaries that include references to other related work, and additional technical discussion or comments about the subject matter. An introductory chapter in English and French provides an overview of all the papers and summarizes crucial issues presented in the papers and their interrelationship.

21st Century Urban Race Politics begins by offering a twenty-first-century understanding of minority representation in historically majority-Caucasian cities and draws on case studies in cities throughout the United States. The aim of this volume is to take stock of what we know about the advantages and disadvantages of the "racialized" and "deracialized" approaches to governance and to describe a third approach, the "universalized interest approach." The authors argue that minority elected officials, when given the power and resources to do so, often do more than represent constituent interests without acknowledging the representation of members of their racial/ethnic group in urban communities. Contributors describe how mayors of various backgrounds have sought to represent minority interests in electoral and governing contexts. In each case, the mayors are found to represent minority interests. In most cases, the representation of minority interests is accomplished without deemphasizing the significance of race and as the mayor maintains support from whites within their electoral and governing coalitions. With case studies from across the country, in medium-sized and large cities, and mayors of various backgrounds, the volume provides a vivid account of how different minority mayors have handled minority representation in historically majority Caucasian cities and what lessons academics and politicians can learn from them.

This book offers a unique intersectional perspective on gender equality, SDG5. It presents an intersection of gender with caste, class, region, ethnic and sexual identities, and other structural drivers of inequalities in various development sectors. It presents case studies and empirical findings from development practice and policymaking and highlights the challenges to implementing SDG5 in practice. It discusses policies to promote gender equality and prevent violence against women and girls, and women in decision-making and leadership positions. The chapters reinstate that gender equality is possible only if unequal gender norms are transformed to recognize women and girls as independent economic entities and not merely homemakers providing unpaid care.
