Zeichnet die Seele den Menschen vor allen anderen Lebewesen aus? Mit dem Begriff der Seele wurde in der westlichen Geistesgeschichte die Sonderstellung des Menschen begründet. Heute ist der Begriff allerdings in Verruf geraten. Handelt es sich tatsächlich um einen antiquierten Begriff oder ist der Mensch mehr als ein komplexes biologisches System? Im vorliegenden Band untersuchen Naturwissenschaftler, Philosophen und Theologen wie der Seelenbegriff weiterentwickelt und zum Verständnis des Menschen als psychophysische Einheit benutzt werden kann. Eine naturalistische Engführung des Fragehorizonts wird vermieden; mithilfe des Seelenbegriffs werden Möglichkeiten einer Bestimmung des Verhältnisses von naturwissenschaftlicher und religiöser Deutung der menschlichen Wirklichkeit aufgezeigt.
