Der Umgang mit Naturschutz und die Integration ökologischer Aspekte in der urbanen Landschaftsgestaltung ist ein aktuelles und wichtiges Thema. In der bisherigen Praxis allerdings werden in der Freiraumgestaltung Naturschutzaspekte häufig nicht aufgegriffen und im urbanen Naturschutz menschliche Nutzungen meist ausgeschlossen. So sollen häufig in der Freiraumplanung bestimmte Flächen unzugänglich gehalten werden, aber dies wird durch die Gestaltung viel zu selten vermittelt und gestützt.
