"French Écocritique is the first book-length study of the culturally specific ways in which contemporary French literature and theory raise questions about nature and environment. Stephanie Posthumus's ground-breaking work brings together thinkers such as Guattari, Latour, and Serres with recent ecocritical theories to complicate what might otherwise become a reductive notion of "French ecocriticism." Working across contemporary philosophy and literature, the book defines the concept of the ecological as an attentiveness to specific nature-culture contexts and to a text's many interdiscursive connections. Posthumus identifies four key concepts, ecological subjectivity, ecological dwelling, ecological politics, and ecological ends, for changing how we think about human-nature relations. French Écocritique highlights the importance of moving beyond canonical ecocritical texts and examining a diversity of cultural and literary traditions for new ways of imagining the environment."--

Bringing together leading scholars from Belgium, Canada, France, and the United States, French Thinking about Animals makes available for the first time to an Anglophone readership a rich variety of interdisciplinary approaches to the animal question in France. While the work of French thinkers such as Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, and Felix Guattari has been available in English for many years, French Thinking about Animals opens up a much broader cross-cultural dialogue within animal studies. These original essays, many of which have been translated especially for this volume, draw on

The book explores the dynamic movement and mobility of plants, challenging traditional perceptions of plants as static organisms. Through a multidisciplinary approach involving historians, literary scholars, geographers, and artists, the work examines how literature can highlight plant mobility and evoke emotional responses. The authors discuss various modes of plant movement, including micro-level movements like leaf and root movements, macro-level plant migrations, and the concept of attraction and morphological changes. The book aims to shed light on the communicative and perceptive nature of plants, emphasizing their active role in ecosystems and their emotional impact on humans. It is intended for readers interested in botany, literature, and environmental studies.
