Assessing the global C-budget in a temperate forest requires a better understanding of CO2 efflux (FRS) response to climatic and spatial variables. To study the variability of FRS at the plot scale, closed-dynamic-chamber systems were used to analyse the soil CO2 efflux in a mixed temperate forest in the Vielsalm area, situated in East Belgium, where Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) are associated in small patches. Two independent systems were implemented : on the one hand the temporal variability of the soil efflux was thoroughly analysed at a limited spatial scale (6 collars) with an original automatic system ; on the other hand, the spatial variability of the soil efflux was measured during short term campaign on 179 points. A multiplicative model, based on empirical equations, was calibrated and validated on these measurements. For the FRS modelling at the large spatial scale (Walloon region), two models were coupled : EFOBEL and YASSO. EFOBEL was developed to integrate the results of the Permament Forest Inventory of Walloon Region and to simulate the forest biomass growth. The outputs of EFOBEL were used as the inputs of YASSO, a model which aims at estimate soil C fluxes due to the climatic variable and forest biomass evolutions. Only longer revolution periods will significantly increase carbon stocks in forest. Changes in the specific composition of the forest are not affecting carbon sequestration in short-term.
