The Vaugondy's complemented the work of the Sansons by strenghtening a rather weak branch of French cartography, that of globes, an activity which linked two groups: geographers and scientific instrument makers. The contribution of the Vaugondy family was also commercial. They formed part of a map-selling business throughout Europe, copied in England and Italy, and published well into the nineteenth century.
