Soft tissue tumors are a rare pathology and until the advent of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, radiologists were not familiar with this uncommon pathology. Because of their rarity, multicentric sutdies are necessary to collect statistically relevant numbers of tumors and to assess the value of new imaging modalities in detection, staging, grading, tissue characterization, and posttreatment follow-up of soft tissue tumors. MRI potentials are most promising due to the highest contrast resolution and multiplanar capabilities of the method. This book is the reflectin of the work of a multicentric European Study Group of more than 30 co-investigators which collected more than 800 cases of soft tissue tumors. Experts on medical imaging and co-investigators contributed to the realisation of this book. In a first part, value of different imaging techniques is assessed while in a second part different tumors are described with special emphasis on magnetic resonance imaging. The extensive material collected and the expertise of the contributors has to be a guarantee that this "state-of-the-art" book of medical imaging of soft tissue tumors wiil help radiologists, surgeons, pathologists, and oncologists and particularly our patients because they deserve the best preoperative evaluation, the most adequate therapy, and the most suited follow-up.

This is a richly illustrated and comprehensive textbook on the imaging of frequently encountered spinal disorders. Degenerative disease, spinal trauma, spinal tumors and the postoperative spine are addressed in detail. In addition, there are individual chapters on embryology, the pediatric spine, biomechanics, scoliosis, bone marrow disorders, infections, spondyloarthropathies and imaging of the sacrum. All imaging modalities are considered, including plain film, multidetector CT and MRI. The book is intended for daily use in any practice that engages in spinal imaging, and will assist both in film interpretation and in image acquisition. Its logical structure and extensive, accurate index are specifically designed to ensure ease of use. This richly illustrated book, in an extensively revised new edition, provides a comprehensive survey of the role of medical imaging studies in the detection, staging, grading, tissue characterization, and post-treatment follow-up of soft tissue tumors. The indications for and relative merits of various imaging modalities are fully described, with particular emphasis on the role of advanced MRI techniques that can improve diagnostic accuracy and evaluation of treatment response. The most recent version of the WHO Classification of Soft Tissue Tumors is introduced, and individual chapters are devoted to imaging of each of the tumor groups in that classification as well as other soft tissue masses. Numerous new illustrations of both common and rare tumors are included, providing a rich pictorial database of soft tissue masses. In addition, imaging findings are correlated with clinical, epidemiologic, and histologic data. Imaging of Soft Tissue Tumors will be of value in daily practice not only for radiologists but also for orthopedic surgeons, oncologists, and pathologists.
