Abstract

The field of sleep medicine is growing rapidly, and the clinical pharmacology of sleep is gaining much attention from sleep physicians. Many new drugs are in the process of being developed and tested for their possible usefulness in the treatment of sleep disorders. The opportunity for further advancement in this field is very promising. This volume covers the clinical and pharmacological treatment of several important sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, and periodic limb movement syndrome. It further addresses the use of sleep medications in children, adolescents, and in the elderly. It offers a comprehensive overview of the currently available hypnotic medications and covers aspects of chronopharmacology and its implications for the pharmacology of sleep. It also reviews the basic science of sleep and sleep disorders, and thus the potential development of new pharmacological approaches. The book will be useful for physicians, psychopharmacologists, psychiatrists, sleep disorder specialists and other healthcare professionals such as nurses, social workers and graduate medical students.

Abstract

Primary Care in Sleep Medicine: A Practical Guide, edited by James F. Pagel and S. R. Pandi-Perumal, is an important book coming at an important time for the increasing number of patients with sleep disorders who are seen in primary care practices. The importance of primary care physicians having more in-depth education and training in sleep medicine has been emphasized in the Institute of Medicine report, “Sleep Disorders and Sleep Deprivation—An Unmet Public Health Problem,” issued in April 2006. This landmark report estimates that 50 to 70 million Americans chronically suffer from a sleep disorder that interferes with their daily function and has long-term adverse effects on their health and quality of life. Lack of sleep can lead to increased rates of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart attack, and stroke. In addition, one-fifth of all serious car accidents are associated with driver sleepiness. The Institute of Medicine report, after carefully examining and reporting on the evidence, concluded that increased awareness and training in the field of sleep disorders for primary care physicians is urgently needed to help address the increasing unmet needs of large numbers of patients with sleep disorders. Primary Care in Sleep Medicine: A Practical Guide is an excellent book that should help to meet this important need.

Abstract

Diagnosing and treating sleep disorders have been added to the primary care physician's list of ever-growing responsibilities. This added expectation presents many risks since sleep medicine is rarely included in the curricula of medical schools or in non-sleep medicine residency training.   The second edition to Primary Care Sleep Medicine fulfills the need of a comprehensive text assisting the physician with up-to-date information on the sleep medicine field. This updated volume represents the cutting edge of knowledge for the field, with summaries of the latest research on new diagnostic tests, medications and therapies; useful for any physician considering specialization in the field. Chapters are authored by leaders in the field of sleep medicine with an understanding of the primary care environment.    Practical and comprehensive, this text is an invaluable resource for physicians and allied health professionals.

Abstract

"A fascinating set of reviews, many of theoretical interest or practical import. 21st Century neurobiology will concentrate on modulating arousal states, as examined in this book. Further, the subject is amenable to thorough genetic analysis, this providing a useful output for modern molecular neurobiology." Donald W. Pfaff, Ph.D., The Rockefeller University "Sleep is an essential biological activity that is intimately connected to the neuroendocrine, autonomic and immune systems of the body. Written by an international cadre of researchers, this timely volume gives an up-to-date summary of the reciprocal influences of sleep-waking activity on neuroendocrine, autonomic and immune function. Chapters in this volume discuss the many mediators involved in sleep regulation, the consequences of sleep deprivation and shift work and dysregulation of neuroendocrine function in sleep-related disorders, among other topics. It should be a valuable resource for basic and clinical researchers." Bruce S. McEwen, Ph.D., The Rockefeller University Neuroendocrine Correlates of Sleep/Wakefulness emerges from three well-established disciplines - neuroendocrinology, neurochemistry of sleep/wakefulness, and sleep medicine...The readers will find also in depth information on neuroendocrine and behavioral correlates of sleep deprivation, circadian rhythms, affective disorders, obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome and infectious diseases. Daniel P. Cardinali and S.R. Pandi-Perumal have edited a book that is clear, comprehensive, well balanced and remarkably complete. This volume will be of interest to a wide circle of readers including neuroendocrinologists, neurologists, psychiatrists psychologists and sleep medicine specialists who evaluate and/or treat patients with sleep disorders. Jaime M. Monti, M.D., Clinics Hospital, School of Medicine " When I first saw the title of this scholarly, up-to-date, and comprehensive multi-author book on the Neuroendocrine Correlates of Sleep and Wakefulness , I could not but think of a 400 BCE tome similarly entitled On Sleep and Sleeplessness, by Aristotle. How far has science gone in understanding the mechanisms of sleep and wakefulness and the pivotal physiologic and pathologic roles of sleep? Sleep and wakefulness constitute major homeostatic systems, whose proper function is crucial to the health and happiness of the individual. Both systems operate at the intersection of the nervous, endocrine, metabolic and immune systems, and their homeostatic mediators include all kinds of molecules, such as neurotransmitters, neuropeptides, hormones and cytokines. This book succeeds in providing, to large extent, the state-of the-art robust knowledge in this important area of science and medicine". George P. Chrousos, M.D., University of Athens, Athens and National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda MD.

Abstract

The diagnosis of mental illness is frequently accompanied by sleep problems; conversely, people experiencing sleep problems may subsequently develop mental illness. Sleep and Mental Illness looks at this close correlation and considers the implications of research findings that have emerged in the last few years. Additionally, it surveys the essential concepts and practical tools required to deal with sleep and co-morbid psychiatric problems. The volume is divided into three main sections: basic science, neuroendocrinology, and clinical science. Included are over 30 chapters on topics such as neuropharmacology, insomnia, depression, dementia, autism, and schizophrenia. Relevant questionnaires for the assessment of sleep disorders, including quality-of-life measurement tools, are provided. There is also a summary table of drugs for treating sleep disorders. This interdisciplinary text will be of interest to clinicians working in psychiatry, behavioral sleep medicine, neurology, pulmonary and critical care medicine.
