Quelles sont les principales raisons du développement inégal des territoires ? L'économie géographique, mais aussi l'histoire économique, permettent de comprendre pourquoi la croissance économique et ses deux sources principales, le capital humain et l'innovation, sont des phénomènes localisés dont la diffusion dans l'espace est lente et imparfaite. Si la proximité des ressources naturelles a largement vu son importance décliner, cela n'implique pas que distance et localisation aient disparu de la vie économique. Au contraire, les travaux les plus récents mettent en évidence les forces qui façonnent la nouvelle division spatiale du travail, laquelle repose principalement sur les grandes métropoles ou régions urbaines. Paradoxalement, la réduction des coûts de transfert des biens et de l'information a permis une telle évolution. La mondialisation accélérée des dernières décennies n'est donc pas celle d'un monde plat : elle a ses pics de prospérité et laisse en arrière ou bouscule un grand nombre de territoires, alors que dans certains pays moins avancés la pauvreté semble s'ancrer comme une marque indélébile des malchances conjuguées de l'histoire et de la géographie.

The development of patent markets should allow for better circulation of knowledge and more efficient allocation of technologies at a global level.
