Abstract

ThisvolumeoftheLNCSseriesisacollectionofpaperspresentedinoralsessions at the Fifth International Conference on Smart Homes and Health Telematics (ICOST 2007) held in the ancient cultural city of Nara, Japan. ICOST started in 2003 with the theme Independent living for persons with disabilities and elderly people and since then we have continuously provided a meeting place where researchers, practitioners, developers, policy makers and users meet to discuss a wide spectrum of research topics related to smart homes and services. Consequently, we feel that the participants of ICOST can share information on the state of the art, exchange and integrate di?erent opinions and open up to collaboration. Technologies are progressing persistently. Because of this progress, especially in the area of information and communication technologies, we believe that it is time to view the smart home technologies from a wider perspective and we have extended the focus of ICOST 2007 to Pervasive Computing Perspectives for Quality of Life Enhancement. This theme has two meanings. One is how to constructpervasivecomputingenvironmentsasacommonworldwidetechnology. The other is to examine in depth the de?nition of quality of life for di?erent people. Under the wide conferencetheme, we received81 submissions.Throughca- ful reviewing, weaccepted 25 papersfor oralpresentationsresulting in an acc- tance rate of about 30%. Each paper was reviewed by at least two international reviewersandscoredaccordingly.Basedonthe scoringandallreviewcomments, 25 papers were ?nally accepted to be included in this volume.
