"Johan Maurits (1604-1679), bouwheer van het Mauritshuis, staat bekend als mecenas van kunst en architectuur. Over zijn optreden als koloniaal bestuurder in Brazilië is minder geschreven. Namens de West-Indische Compagnie was hij tussen 1636 en 1644 gouverneur-generaal van het noordoosten van het land.
