Adsorption on activated carbon is one of the most effective methods for removing pesticides; however, activated carbonuse is limited due to its high cost and low selectivity. Recently, manyresearchers have investigated low cost adsorbents (from agricultural wasteproducts, biomass and various solid substances) as alternative cheap adsorbentsto remove pesticides. However, the presence of waxes and other impuritiesdecrease the active surface area of these adsorbents; hence, theseunprocessed adsorbents have a poor removal of pollutants compared toactivated carbon. Thus, these adsorbents can only show their low cost aspectand cannot guarantee their high performance aspect for removal pesticides. Mostresearch on low cost adsorbents is limited to the lab scale. Activated carbons, produced from renewable and cheap raw materials, respond to the low-costaspect. They will be compared with commercial activated carbon, which is a highquality adsorbent to respond to the high performance aspect. Furthermore, theseactivated carbons will be studied not only at lab sale but also at pilot scaleas low cost high performance adsorbents alternative to commercial activatedcarbon for the removal of pesticides during drinking water production.
