Abstract

"The term ´Judeo-Christian` in reference to a tradition, heritage, ethic, civilization, faith etc. has been used in a wide variety of contexts with widely diverging meanings. Contrary to popular belief, the term was not coined in the United States in the middle of the 20th century but in 1831 in Germany by Ferdinand Christian Baur. By acknowledging and returning to this European perspective and context, the volume engages the historical, theological, philosophical and political dimensions of the term`s development. Scholars of European intellectual history will find this volume timely and relevant."

Abstract

This book is unique in presenting biblical hermeneutics in action. The present volume brings together contributions that can be grouped into three parts.0In the first part, Emmanuel Nathan, Marianne Moyaert, Ming Yeung Cheung, Pierre Van Hecke and Roger Burggraeve each reflect on the relevance of a meaningful biblical hermeneutics in order to adequately (re-)engage the Bible today.0In the second part, Emmanuel Nathan, Marianne Moyaert, David Dessin, Roger Burggraeve, Sydney Palmer and Martijn Steegen delve into specific biblical texts in search of their deeper philosophical and theological insights.0In the third and final part, Ineke Cornet, Martin Kallungal, Thomas Vollmer, Annette Aronowicz and Reimund Bieringer offer specialised hermeneutical reflections on how the Bible has been, and can be, engaged in different contexts.0Viewed as a whole, the contributions contained in this volume resonate with a view of biblical hermeneutics as an ongoing and dialogical process and, so doing, demonstrate that the Bible, far from being a venerable object of the past, continues to engage us in meaningful conversation today.

Abstract

In the framework of a larger research project into ‘New Perspectives on Paul and the Jews’, eight scholars from Europe, Israel, and North America join forces in querying Paul’s relationship to Jews and Judaism. The sample text selected for this inquiry is the Second Letter to the Corinthians, a document particularly suited for this purpose as it reflects violent clashes between Paul and rivalling Jews and Jewish Christians. While the first three articles address more general literary and historical questions, the following five present in-depth case studies of much-studied passages from the letter and the underlying issues. An introductory essay queries how in the case at hand we can gain an adequate understanding of Paul’s theology while fully respecting his particular place in Judaism.

Abstract

2 Corinthians: A Bibliography is intended to be a complete bibliography until 2007. It contains almost 1,900 entries of academic publications on Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians. Making use of the standard bibliographical tools (both printed and electronic), the goal was to include as many references as possible. However, there is no pretense of being exhaustive. 2 Corinthians: A Bibliography builds on the list published in Reimund Bieringer & Jan Lambrecht, Studies in 2 Corinthians (BETL, 112), Leuven: University Press - Peeters, 1994, pp. 3-66. The list of entries up to 1993 was corrected, updated and supplemented with the works published between 1994 and 2007. In addition to a full alphabetical list at the end, this book contains a list of commentaries, a list of references ordered according to the pericopes of 2 Corinthians and according to themes contained in the letter. In order to increase user friendliness full references are used in each list.

Abstract

Cultural memory is the shared reproduction and recollection of what has been learned and retained, normally treated as “the cultural heritage”. The purpose of this book, the first product of the research program Cultural Memory in Biblical Exegesis, is to study how memory is inscribed and embodied in biblical culture and its surrounding area. The essays in this volume seek to open new investigations into cultural memory in biblical and cognate studies, and to include a plethora of methods and perspectives such as the relationship between cultural memory approach and post-colonialism, globalism and epistemology.
