Abstract

"Synopsis: The theme of this textbook revolves around how machine learning (ML) can help civil and environmental engineers transform their domain. This textbook hopes to deliver the knowledge and information necessary to educate engineering students and practitioners on the principles of ML and how to integrate these into our field. This textbook is about navigating the realm of data-driven ML, explainable ML, and causal ML from the context of education, research, and practice. In hindsight, this textbook augments ML into the heart of engineering. Together, we will go over the big ideas behind ML. We will ask and answer questions such as, what is ML? Why is ML needed? How does ML differ from statistics, physical testing, and numerical simulation? Can we trust ML? And how can we benefit from ML, adapt to it, adopt it, wield it, and leverage it to overcome many, many of the problems that we may face? This book is also about showing you, my dear reader, how to amplify your engineering knowledge with a new tool. A tool that is yet to be formally taught in our curriculum. A tool that many civil and environmental engineering departments and schools may not fully appreciate ; yet are eager to know more about!"--

Abstract

"Actionable strategies for the design and construction of fire-resistant structures. This hands-on guide clearly explains the complex building codes and standards that relate to fire design and presents hands-on techniques engineers can apply to prevent or mitigate the effects of fire in structures. Dedicated chapters discuss specific procedures for steel, concrete, and timber buildings. You will get step-by-step guidance on how to evaluate fire resistance using both testing and calculation methods. Structural Fire Engineering begins with an introduction to the behavioral aspects of fire and explains how structural materials react when exposed to elevated temperatures. From there, the book discusses the fire design aspects of key codes and standards, such as the International Building Code, the International Fire Code, and the NFPA Fire Code. Advanced topics are covered in complete detail, including residual capacity evaluation of fire damaged structures and fire design for bridges and tunnels. Explains the fire design requirements of the IBC, IFC, the NFPA Fire Code, and National Building Code of Canada ; Presents design strategies for steel, concrete, and timber structures as well as for bridges and tunnels ; Contains downloadable spreadsheets and problems along with solutions for instructors" [Publisher]

Abstract

This book, 'Construction Materials and Their Properties for Fire Resistance and Insulation,' provides an in-depth examination of the fire resistance and insulating properties of various construction materials. Edited by Paul O. Awoyera and M.Z. Naser, it is part of the Woodhead Publishing Series in Civil and Structural Engineering. The publication discusses the thermal properties of materials like gypsum, timber, cold-formed steels, and novel concrete composites, and their behavior under elevated temperatures. It includes research on fire damage recovery and the influence of cooling regimes on novel concretes. The book is intended for civil engineers, researchers, and professionals seeking to enhance building safety and material performance in fire-prone environments.
