Gottfried Jäger (*1937) is one of the most important photographers and photo-theorists of the post-war period. Along with Otto Steinert (Essen) and Bernd & Hilla Becher (Düsseldorf), Jäger influenced generations of photographers with his non-objective photography and his teaching at the FH Bielefeld. As early as the 1960s, he developed the concept of "generative photography". For him the medium of photography itself becomes the theme, the medium becomes the object. He is a "photographer of photography" (B. Stiegler). The Bielefeld artist has also played an important role with his theoretical writings on imaging photography (in dialogue with V. Flusser and L. Wiesing, among others). A retrospective of his work is a desideratum of the exhibition business. The approximately 400 square meter presentation of the Sprengel Museum Hannover will accomplish this with an exemplary selection of works from the artist's most important creative periods and forms in six rooms.

This publication provides a comprehensive survey of the various styles and approaches represented in the works of 171 artists from 22 countries. For all its diversity, the Peter C. Ruppert Collection forms a coherent solely for itself, as opposed to striving for an abstract or symbolic illustration of the visually perceivable world. The spectrum ranges from the geometric forms and pure colours in the painting of Josef Albers, Max Bill and Victor Vasarely to the beginnings of computer art as seen in the work of Manfred Mohr, from the virtual sculptures of Gerhard Mantz to the latest examples of concrete photography.
