Abstract

Biological control of plant diseases and plant pathogens is of great significance in forestry and agriculture. There is great incentive to discover biologically active natural products from higher plants that are better than synthetic agrochemicals and are much safer, from a health and environmental point-of-view. The development of natural products such as herbicides, fungicides, and their role in biological control of plant diseases, indicates a reduction in environmental and health hazards. Allelopathic techniques offer a real future in solving several problems, for instance biological control of plant pests. This book is organized around the indication that allelochemicals can be employed for biological control of plant pathogens and plant diseases. Specifically, this volume focuses on (i) discovery and development of natural product based fungicides for agriculture, (ii) direct use of allelochemicals as well as indirect effects through cover crops and organic amendments for plant parasitic pest control and (iii) application of allelopathy in pest management. .

Abstract

The first volume of the Integrated Management of Plant Pests and Diseases book series presents general concepts on integrated pest and disease management, organized in three sections. Section one (modeling, management, environment) includes chapters on infection models, resurgence and replacement, plant disease epidemiology and effects of climate change in tropical environments. Followed by two reviews on IPM in post-harvest and carrot crops. The second section (emerging technologies) includes remote sensing and information technology, integrated by reviews on Bacillus thuringiensis and the role of mycorrhizae in IPM. In the third section (molecular aspects) the management of insect-borne viruses with transmission interference, some novel products for biological control and advances in molecular detection, are discussed.

Abstract

The third volume of the series covers, in three Sections, emerging issues in the integrated management of main diseases of perennial and annual crops. The chapters provide basic data about the diseases concerned, in order to facilitate their detection and recognition either by field and laboratory inspection, discussing the main management possibilities experienced by farmers, plant pathologists and consultants, in different areas of the world. The first Section covers key diseases of stone fruit and apple trees, as well as the phytoplasma diseases of grapevine and fruit crops, the citrus diseases caused by Phytophthora spp., and the management of chestnut diseases, esca complex on grapevine and Rosellinia necatrix root rot. In the second Section, on annual crops, a first chapter describes the use of simulation models for potato late blight management, followed by a review about the potentials of the decision support systems approach, with an example of integrated forecasting system for Phytophthora infestans on potato. Following chapters review the management of bacterial fruit-blotch on cucurbits, Verticillium wilt on tomato, Sclerotinia rot on carrot, and cotton and rice diseases. A further review describes biological and integrated means to control rust diseases. In the third, final Section, two innovating approaches to disease management are reviewed: DNA fingerprinting methods, for microbial pathogens diagnostics with potentials in taxonomy and plant protection, and the management of pests and diseases through the exploitation of endophytes and their metabolites, a new research field with interesting perspectives and benefits in IPM/IDM.

Abstract

The second volume of the IMPD series describes aspects related to most important phytoparasitic nematodes, considering the integration of biological control methods with other management practices and technologies, including the use of predatory nematodes and microbial rhizosphere antagonists. Chapters cover topics like the mode of action and interactions of nematophagous fungi, the efficacy of control and management of plant parasitic nematode communities through a soil conservation approach, and exploitation of nematodes-bacteria antagonistic relationships. A focus is given on regional issues, like the management of nematodes parasitizing staple crops, i.e. andean tubers or some important grain crops, like soybean in North and South America or cereals. A review on nematode management in cotton is integrated by a chapter on management of nematodes on wheat. New technologies are also revised, including the potentials of control methods based on RNA interference and issues related to the use of biofumigation to control nematodes in different regional or crop contexts.

Abstract

The fourth volume of the IPMD Series covers, in three Sections, emerging issues in the integrated management of main nematode parasites of fruit, tree and forest crops. The chapters provide basic data about the crops concerned, listing main nematode threats, in order to facilitate their detection and management. Special attention is given to the management strategies as experienced by farmers, nematologists and consultants, in different areas of the world, including exploitation of plant resistance sources and integrated or organic management. The first Section covers key nematode parasites of tropical fruit crops, including banana, cocoa, coffee, citrus and other tropical crops, and the related management options. In the second Section, nematode problems of grapevine and other Mediterranean crops like pistachio, Prunus spp. and olive are revised. Epidemiology data and management options are given, ranging from the status of grapevine resistance to vector species, to available chemicals, plant quarantine schemes and virus vectors control tools. In the third final Section, an updated review of Pine Wilt Nematode is provided, with new data on the threat represented by its spreading in Western Europe. The book approaches a broad range of subjects in a traditional way, with dedicated and detailed chapters, written by experienced nematologists, on defined topics. This approach provides a focus on the nematological issue of interest or that the reader has to afford, allowing the problem identification and illustrating the solutions developed and experienced by the authors. The general aim of the book, in an integration effort with Vol. 2 of the same IPMD series, is to provide updated background data together with a range of solutions for important nematode pests, worldwide. The volume is directed to students, technicians, extensions and scientists, providing contents of a professional level. Basic concepts and practical examples are provided, useful to enable the reader to analyse and act in relation to his own conditions, crop environment and nematode population parameters. Among the features and benefits of the book also figure practical management data, updated bibliographies and exhaustive illustrations.

Abstract

The fifth and last Volume of this IPMD series reviews, in a multi-disciplinary approach, recent achievements in crop protection and integrated management of arthropod pests. The volume is organized in a first section covering IPM in citrus productions, a Second one dealing with advancements in the integration of management technologies and a last section covering mites and their biological control agents. As for the previous volumes, we attempted to provide an informative coverage for a broad range of agricultural systems and situations. The chapters are mainly organized and centered on crops, with a particular emphasis on citrus. This is one of the main crops in which biological control and IPM approaches were tested successfully, and the experience gained herein may indeed result helpful for IMP efforts deployed worldwide on other crops and/or cropping systems. Chapters in Section 2 review the integration of insect and disease management options in pecan crops, the application of remote sensing technologies, the status of knowledge about plant defense compounds and their potentials. For IPM of invasive species, an update is provided on the experience gained on the Red Palm Weevil (RPW) in Egypt. Long-term technological solutions for IPM in forests and park areas through aerial treatments with Bt spores concludes this Section. Finally, in Section 3, updated reviews about biological control agents of mites are provided.
