The lentinane is a polysaccharide of type β (1-> 3) glucan extracts from the wall of the mushroom Lentinus edodes. We grant him immunostimulant and anticancer properties. It would activate macrophages by being bound to various receptors, such as the TLR-4, activating the production of cytokines which will activate itself other immunological ways, such as those of the lymphocytes Th1. The complement is also activated by the lentinan, favoring its inflammatory action and of opsonisation. We can find some clinical trials which highlight a significant efficiency of the lentinan in cancer, for example a meta analysis which shows that patients under lentinan have a median survival time of 139 days against 114 for those with only chemotherapies. Others show the effect that lentinan has on cytokines pro and anti-inflammatory, and the consequences on the balance Th1 / Th2. Finally, a last type of studies tries to specify at which kind of patient this treatment works best, by measuring biological factors or quality of life. Further to all these studies, the lentinane thus seems to be a new interesting therapeutic way for the care of cancer, and possibly other diseases where the immune system intervene, as the allergic rhinitis or the AIDS.
