Language policies are politically sensitive in impacting, either positively or negatively, language choice, language prestige, and language spread. Rising regional integration, both formal and informal, adds to the sensitivity and complexity of language politics, whether in North America, South America or Europe. Language Politics of Regional Integration: Cases from the Americas shows how language politics vary across the region and contrast with language politics in Europe. Morris presents a framework for systematically comparing selected cases from the Americas by distinguishing between eight different dimensions of language politics. These are then applied to case studies of Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. The book concludes by identifying in each case particularly divisive issues as well as opportunities for promoting reconciliation.

"Language issues have been and promise to continue to be at the heart of national political life in Canada. The results of governmental language policy play a crucial role in determining the unity of the country. However, despite its importance, language policy is often difficult to understand because it is part of a complicated political terrain where numerous policies intersect. Canadian Language Polices in Comparative Perspective presents a long-required assessment of the field and utilises a widely recognized comparative method that makes this volume the most systematic study of language issues available." "Capturing the dynamism of Canadian language policies, The essays in this volume analyse and compare the effects, histories, and features of language policies as they have been enacted and implemented by Canadian provincial and federal governments. The contributors' comparisons reveal significant domestic and international implications for language policy. An important study of a social and political issue that has immediate local, national, and international consequences, Canadian Language Policies in Comparative Perspective assembles knowledgeable authorities on language policy to provide a comprehensive synthesis of its consequences."--pub. desc.

Throughout human history, the fate of languages has been closely linked to political power relationships. Political shifts in the international system continue to affect linguistic patterns, which today are still in a state of flux following the end of the Cold War. This book considers the effects of present-day trends in global politics on the relative status of languages, and the directions in which the linguistic hierarchy might develop in the future. What are the prospects for the continuing spread of English? Will other traditionally prominent languages such as French and German gain or lose influence? Will languages such as Arabic and Japanese increase in international status? Will minority languages continue to lose ground and disappear? The book assesses these prospects, looking at the major world regions, and with its interdisciplinary approach it will appeal to researchers and students of sociolinguistics and language planning as well as of international relations.
