This is the first book to present a wide selection of works from the Musée des Erreurs, or Museum of Mistakes. Founded in Brussels in 2013 by Pierre Leguillon, the Musée des Erreurs is a traveling exhibition that encamps for a show in the halls of brick-and-mortar museums?like a traveling circus that comes to town?and then moves on. The rest of the time, the collection is stored in the artist's studio apartment, mainly in his kitchen cupboards. Most of the items are serially manufactured and of negligible material value: postcards, record sleeves, posters large and small, pieces of fabric, ceramics, folk art, children's drawings and other miscellany. This book also includes items deemed too small, fragile or insignificant to take on tour in the past, as well as photographs of everyday street scenes that shed some light on various facets of the collection. Whether signed or anonymous, these artifacts defy any claims of authoritativeness in an age in which visual culture is shared on social media and all over the web, with no distinctions of substantive or aesthetic value, often with no captions and, all too frequently, with erroneous attributions. For Leguillon, the constant sorting and reshuffling of the items helps us revisit conventional interpretations and subvert, with an ample dose of humor, the sort of cultural "prêt-à-porter" so many museums serve us up nowadays. Essays by Patricia Falguières and Morad Montazami situate the Musée des Erreurs in the tradition of art museums and the phenomenon of cultural appropriation. And Carrie Pilto contributes freestyle captions commenting on the featured items.

" En 1980-1981, je terminais mes études de médecine en France par un stage d'interne dans un hôpital d'une petite ville rurale. J'étais loin de mon université de référence, loin des hôpitaux où j'avais été formé, et sans aucun contact sur place avec des médecins hospitaliers. J'étais livré à moi-même, sûr de rien dans mes connaissances, et confronté tout de suite à un lieu rempli de gens âgés et proches de la mort. [...] Je décidai de passer dans toutes les chambres pour photographier toutes les personnes, avoir ainsi la mémoire de tous les visages. Et surtout je décidai de faire ces photographies en noir et blanc, simplement parce que je n'aimais pas les couleurs (in) hospitalières des lieux. Au développement des photos, ce fut une révélation. Tout ce que j'avais quotidiennement sous les yeux et que je ne voyais pas me sautait littéralement à la figure: la souffrance morale des gens, leur solitude extrême, leur attente impatiente de la mort libératrice, leur colère si violente contre nous, les personnels, qui leur infligions une telle vie. [...] En 1983, j'ai écrit et soutenu ma thèse, faisant de celle-ci un témoignage sur une expérience vécue plutôt qu'une étude technique. [...] Je suis retourné dans des centres de Long Séjour pour y réaliser ce qui fut ma première vraie série de photographies, les visages de vieillards. Et je décidai de faire des études de photographie après avoir vendu mon cabinet médical. C'était en 1986. " Philippe Bazin.

Caspian: The Elements' is Chloe Dewe Mathews's record of her journey through the beguiling Caspian region, considering its people and geography. Between 2010 and 2015, Dewe Mathews visited the five countries that surround the Caspian Sea: Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Southern Russia, and Northern Iran. There, far from the arena of global politics, Dewe Mathews found that materials like oil, salt, and water are involved in the mystical, practical, artistic, religious, and therapeutic aspects of daily life. Divided into three distinct chapters-"Oil, Gas, Fire," "Rock, Salt, Uranium," and "Water"- Caspian: The Elements is composed of a series of visual stories exploring the ways in which humans are inextricably linked to this enigmatic and much-coveted landscape.

Pour les sciences sociales, l’enquête de terrain est incontournable. Mais alors que l’approche classique se fonde sur l’opposition traditionnelle entre terrain et bureau et sur l’objectivité supposée du chercheur, le travail in situ est appréhendé ici comme une zone accidentée, une expérience dont les rugosités, les malentendus et les perturbations constituent la matière même de la recherche. À la croisée de plusieurs pratiques, les auteurs de cet ouvrage déjouent les lignes établies en créant des situations inédites susceptibles de révéler la société sous un jour nouveau. L’expérience artistique (théâtre, performance, cinéma) alimente le questionnement anthropologique, tandis que le renouvellement de perspective est envisagé à partir du réexamen critique de l’ensemble des processus d’écriture et de restitution.
