Abstract

"Having travelled through various parts of the Arab world and conducted extensive research with youth populations, Momani has formed a more hopeful and positive view of the prospects for change in the Middle East. This book will be an accessible study which focuses on individuals contexualized within broader economic and social changes occurring at the global level. Interweaving political analysis, historical narrative, and on the ground interviews, this will be a timely corrective to an embedded perception of Arab youth."--

Abstract

On January 25, 2011, the world's eyes were on Egypt's Tahrir Square as millions of people poured into the city center to call for the resignation of president Hosni Mubarak. Since then, few scholars or journalists have been given the opportunity to reflect on the nationwide moment of transformation and the hope that was embodied by the Egyptian Revolution. In this important and necessary volume, leading Egyptian academics and writers share their eyewitness experiences. They examine how events unfolded in relation to key social groups and institutions such as the military, police, labor, intellectuals, Coptic Christians, and the media; share the mood of the nation; assess what happened when three recent regimes of Egyptian rule came to an end; and account for the dramatic rise and fall of the Muslim Brotherhood. The contributors' deep engagement with politics and society in their country is evident and sets this volume apart from most of what has been published in English about the Arab Spring. The diversity of views brought together here is a testament to the contradictions and complexities of historical and political changes that affect Egypt and beyond.

The contributors examine Canada's efforts to promote its interests and values-peace building, peacekeeping, multiculturalism, and multilateralism, for example-and investigate the views of interested communities on Canada's

Abstract

Iraq's streets are unsafe, its people tormented, and its identity as a state challenged from within and without. For some, Iraq is synonymous with internal hatred, bloodshed, and sectarianism. The contributors to this book, however, know another Iraq: a country that was once full of hope and achievement and that boasted one of the most educated workforces in its region-a cosmopolitan secular society with a great tradition of artisans, poets, and intellectuals. The memory of that Iraq inspired the editors of this volume to explore Iraq's current struggle. The contributors delve into the iss

Abstract

Following 9/11, the securitization of state practices and policies has chipped away at the citizenship and personal rights of all Canadians, particularly those of Arab descent. This book argues that, in a securitized global context and through racialized immigration and security policies, Arab Canadians have become "targeted transnationals." Negative media representations have further legitimized their homogenization and racialization. With an eye to the implications for human rights, multiculturalism, and integration, the contributors to this book draw on qualitative interviews, policy, and media analysis to examine state practices towards, and media representations of, Arab Canadians. They also present voices that counter the dominant discourse and trace forms of community resistance to the racialization of Arab Canadians. Targeted Transnationals concludes with reflections on the challenges to integration, and the relevance of multiculturalism in the context of globalization and transnationalism.

Abstract

"The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is a pivotal multilateral institution in global economic governance tasked with ensuring monetary stability and preventing financial crises through promoting balanced trade, economic growth, and poverty reduction. IMF research and expertise also play a powerful normative role in shaping the contours of economic policy choices of its 190 member-states. Fallout of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic reveal that the IMF sits at a critical moment in its history. On one hand, reaction to these crises has produced an IMF that is more flexible, open to critique and reform, and arguably thus better equipped to meet its global economic governance mandates effectively. However, power within the IMF remains concentrated among advanced economies, hindering inclusivity and trust that the institution treats all its members in an even handed manner. Resurgent geopolitical tensions, the rise of populist nationalism, and economic imbalances further strain the IMF's ability to uphold liberal internationalism. Drawing from leading IMF scholars, IMF staff and management, and CSO representatives, the Handbook on the IMF engages with these challenges from a diversity of perspectives and proposes policy recommendations that the IMF should implement to successfully meet the increasingly complex landscape of 21st-century global economic governance"--

Abstract

Even as Canadian universities suggest their gender issues have largely been resolved, many women in academia tell a different story. Systemic discrimination, the underrepresentation of women in more senior and lucrative roles, and the belief that gender-related concerns will simply self-correct with greater representation add up to a serious gender problem.Although widely acknowledged, reliable data demonstrating these problems is elusive. Glass Ceilings and Ivory Towers fills this research gap with a cross-disciplinary, data-driven investigation of gender inequality in Canadian universities. Research presented in this book reveals, for example, that women are more likely to hold sessional teaching positions and to face difficulties obtaining funding. They are also poorly represented at the upper echelons of the professoriate and must contend with a gender pay gap that widens as they move up the ranks.

Abstract

The Canadian Armed Forces has not always embraced diversity and inclusion, but its future depends on it. As the country’s demographic makeup changes, its military must adapt to a new multicultural reality and diminishing pools of people from which it can recruit. Canada’s population is increasingly urbanized, immigrant, and not necessarily Christian, white, or bilingual. To attract and retain CAF personnel, the military will have to embrace and champion diversity while demonstrating that it is inclusive. Using a number of cases to highlight both challenges and opportunities, Strengthening the Canadian Armed Forces through Diversity and Inclusion provides a timely look at an established Canadian institution in a rapidly changing world. The editors explore how Canadian Muslim youth, LGBTQ+ individuals, women, racialized minorities, Indigenous communities, and people of non-Christian faiths see their experiences in the CAF. While diversity is a reality, inclusion is still a work in progress for the Canadian Armed Forces, as it is for society at large.
