Sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE. From Soil Behavior Fundamentals to Innovations in Geotechnical Engineering, GSP 233, honors the technical contribution of Roy Olson, Ph.D., P.E., NAE, Distinguished Member ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains a total of 51 papers, 21 authored or co-authored by Prof. Olson along with 30 peer-reviewed contemporary, invited or submitted papers. Olson's early work dealt with clay behavior, consolidation analyses, and compaction of unsaturated soils. His later work focused on applications of soil behavior in foundation and forensic engineering including axial capacity of piles in sand and clay, pull out capacity of suction caisson foundations, and failures of excavations and bulkhead structures. Contemporary innovations discussed in papers contributed to this volume include developments in consolidation analyses, modeling of shear strength, measurements of permeability, and interpretation of in-situ tests. Lessons learned from failures along with recent developments in foundation engineering such as characterization of energy piles, calculation of settlement from dynamic soil properties, developments in finite element modeling of foundations, mechanism of failure of jacked piles, mitigation of piling noise, and field load tests on a variety of foundations are also included. From Soil Behavior Fundamentals to Innovations in Geotechnical Engineering contains practical and technical information on soil behavior fundamentals and current appplications in geotechnical engineering that will be of interest to educators, researchers, and practicing geotechnical engineers.

Sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE. Full-Scale Testing and Foundation Design, GSP 227, honors Bengt H. Fellenius, Dr.Tech., P.Eng., for his noteworthy efforts to advance foundation engineering research, design, construction, and testing practices. From the beginning in Sweden of his 50-year career as a geotechnical engineer through nearly two decades as a professor of civil engineering at the University of Ottawa, Dr. Fellenius has made outstanding contributions in the international arena to the development and advancement of innovative approaches and practical methods for incorporating full-scale testing in foundation design, especially for deep foundations. This collection contains 51 papers on the use of full-scale testing to enhance the design of foundations. Eighteen papers are reprints of landmark articles authored or co-authored by Dr. Fellenius. Thirty-three additional peer-reviewed papers written especially for this collection present test methods for various types of foundations and describe useful applications in a diversity of situations. These papers offer findings from interesting projects and document valuable lessons learned by some of the leading experts in the field of foundation engineering from around the world. Full-Scale Testing and Foundation Design contains technical and practical information that will be valuable to geotechnical engineers, foundation specialists, researchers, and construction engineers.

Prepared by the Geo-Institute of ASCE. This collection contains 40 invited papers on the engineering design, analysis, construction, and monitoring of foundations. The volume is assembled in honor of Clyde N. Baker, Jr., P.E., S.E., Dist.M.ASCE. For more than 50 years Clyde Baker has made distinguished contributions to the advancement of foundation engineering, beginning with the early Chicago high-rise buildings through to to the world's current record-setting skyscrapers. The invited papers were contributed by professors, researchers, practicing structural and geotechnical engineers, and contractors. Topics include: historical reviews of land and offshore foundations work; fundamental and advanced foundation analytical procedures; foundation design using in situ geotechnical measurements; drilled shafts in soft and hard rock; foundations in difficult soils and geologic conditions; driven piles; foundations for static and dynamic loads; testing and long-term monitoring; and case histories.
