Abstract

What is the best way to achieve sustainable energy savings in buildings? The mainstream construction industry has been saying for decades: it's insulation. Today there is a growing movement among architects who claim that, by contrast, it is intelligent design that provides the best energetic results. This book describes the history, theory and facts of the mainstream insulation technology and the emerging alternative design approaches.

Abstract

Renewable energy is rising within an energy system dominated by powerful vested energy interests in fossil fuels, nuclear and electric utilities. Analyzing renewables in six very different countries, the author argues that it is the extent to which states have controlled these vested interests that determines the success or failure of renewables.

Abstract

Public service broadcasters across Europe are venturing into the digital world, launching niche TV channels, building extensive websites, developing commercial services, entering into partnerships with external actors, and exploring new ways to reach users, whether its through smart phone apps or screens in public spaces. Such endeavours intensify fundamental discussions about what we need public service media institutions for. These are complex discussions, building on history, encompassing new technology, and involving a range of strong stakeholders. Recently, the so-called public value test has emerged as the focal point for these discussions. As a detailed regulatory scheme to measure the public worth and possible market impact of planned publicly funded media services, the public value test is causing controversy across Europe. This collection of short essays from academics, regulators, public broadcasters and private media representatives, provides thought-provoking perspectives on the state of play of public value tests in a range of European states. In so doing, the book is a topical intervention in the ongoing debate about the future of our media systems.

Abstract

This book considers the material basis of building as a key impetus of both urbanization and the energetics of urban life. The otherwise externalized material geographies and thermodynamics of building's material basis reveal much about the dynamics and efficacy of how we build. This book plots the material history and geography for one plot of land in Manhattan: the parcel of land under the Empire State Building over the past two hundred years. Through rich illustrations, it tracks all the building material that have passed through this parcel or remain it in geographic and ecological dynamics: spatially (in terms of their geographic material footprints and industrial processes) and quantitatively (in terms of embodied energy, embodied carbon, and energy flow). In successive chapters, the book articulates the empire and states that are inherent to building, but remain unconsidered abstract and unknown by architects.

Abstract

"People are what make companies great. Good leaders know this, and spend time, effort, and money taking care of the people who work for them so that their business results are phenomenal. So why is it that so many people are still miserable at work. Experts around the world offer countless ideas and techniques and training for elevating the joy (and performance) of workers. And still we fail. Things must change. Using potent examples from 35 years of working inside and outside of organizations as they strive to be people centered, bestselling author and consultant/coach Moe Carrick offers a fresh, honest, and direct roadmap for leaders everywhere who seek to make their workplace fit for human life. Bravespace Workplace shows us the unadulterated truth of what it takes to make companies bring out the absolute best in human beings, despite our messy, imperfect, needy, demanding, and complex habits, needs and issues. The book shows how leaders need to focus on six interdependent levers of their day-to-day work (culture, leadership, team, meaning, design, and partnership with machines) to materially enliven and lift the humanity and the performance of everyone who works for them - which is a win-win for both employee and employer. Bravespace Workplace offers a clearly imagined future for organizations in which the people who work there grow, connect, and thrive. Carrick holds a potent point of view about the unarguable aspects of actually creating a workplace for people, not machines. The book is for leaders in all organizations, at every level, as well as people development, HR, OD, coaches, and consultants who advise others about organizational culture, leadership, structures, and teams." -- Publisher's description.
