21 février 1916 : un déluge de feu, craché par mille trois cents obusiers, s'abat sur les trois divisions françaises tapies dans les forts de Verdun et dans les tranchées alentour. Après neuf heures de bombardement, les troupes d'assaut allemandes s'élancent et réalisent une percée presque décisive. Ainsi commence la plus grande bataille de la Première Guerre mondiale. Pendant huit mois, Français et Allemands vont se livrer une lutte sans merci, une impitoyable guerre d'épuisement. Car la bataille réclame chaque jour son lot de combattants : on dénombre plus de sept cent mille victimes, morts, blessés et disparus. La jeunesse d'Allemagne et de France est laminée sur ces quelques kilomètres carrés de terrain. La guerre qui a embrasé le monde deux ans plus tôt aboutit ici à un suicide des peuples. Ce livre nous plonge dans l'effroyable quotidien de Verdun : les gaz, les pilonnages, les attaques au lance-flammes, les tranchées que l'on prend pour les reperdre aussitôt, la boue, et cette peur omniprésente qui étreint les combattants. Avec Verdun, un point de non-retour est atteint : la mort, désormais, sera industrielle. La victoire de Verdun n'est pas, comme on l'a trop souvent décrite, celle de tel ou tel général. Qu'elle ait porté Pétain au pinacle avant de le rejeter, et Nivelle au sommet avant son limogeage, importe moins que la lutte pour la survie de centaines de milliers de Français et d'Allemands perdus au cœur de l'enfer.
