"For decades now, writers, filmmakers, artists and others have been interested in the feminine issue in their artistic works. Their narratives bring to the light terms such as feminisms and sororities in diverse political and cultural contexts. Our book aims to explore different aspects of feminism and solidarity, of female individual and group struggles and of their social affirmation through the centuries and on different continents. The volume follows a diachronic, interdisciplinary and intergenerational approach on the topic of contemporary feminisms seen through the lens of feminine sororal and solidarity links (or through their lack of) during centuries and in different Francophone geographies. A diverse theoretical approach is present in the volume: from gender theories, racial theories, socio-critical and anthropological theories to Girlhood Studies and Cultural Studies among others"--

In Franco-Maghrebi Artists of the 2000s: Transnational Narratives and Identities Ramona Mielusel offers an account of the way how young artists (writers, filmmakers, actors, singers, photographers, contemporary migrant artists) of Maghrebi origin residing in France during the last twenty years (2000-2016) contest French “national identity” in their work. Mielusel's interest lies in analyzing the impact that these “minor” artists and their chosen genres have on mainstream cultural productions. She argues that constant displacement and changes in political, social and cultural contexts have significantly transformed the dynamics that govern the relationship between the center (Metropolitan France) and the periphery (its Others). Most importantly, she seeks to position their work in the field of transnationalism, which has dominated postcolonial studies and cultural studies in the past decade.

Artistic (Self)-Representations of Islam and Muslims: Perspectives Across France and the Maghreb is a collection of essays that explores the question of artistic representation(s)/self-representation(s) of Muslim religious and cultural identity in France, the Maghreb and in/between since the 2000s. The volume offers a plurality of feminine and masculine voices and points of view on cultural Islam (Franco-French, Franco-Maghrebi, Maghrebi), all the while addressing the impact of events like 9/11, the tragic attacks in France in 2015-2016 (Charlie Hebdo, Stade de France, Bataclan, Nice), and the Arab Spring. Taken together, the volume features a transnational and transversal set of artistic voices that are not looking for consensus, but rather invoke dissensus (Rancière) and a full range of expression. A necessary part of that full range of expression is (self)-representations: Muslims representing themselves, though this is no facile (self)-representations, as artists continue to use the properties of the imagination and performance to complexify an easy reading, reductive meaning, or oversimplified interpretation. This interdisciplinary study contributes to the fields of French and Francophone Studies, Humanities and Global/Cultural Studies such as political studies, sociology, political philosophy, literature, cinema, visual arts and media studies with a focus on broadening views on the topic of Islam and Muslim (self)-representations across disciplines. Ramona Mielusel is Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She is interested in interdisciplinary and comparative approaches to Contemporary French and Francophone Cultural Studies with a special focus on immigration, transnationalism, multiculturalism, postcolonial studies and identity politics. She is the author of Langue, espace et (re)composition identitaire dans les oeuvres de Mehdi Charef, Farid Boudjellal et Tony Gatlif (L'Harmattan, 2015) and Franco-Maghrebi Artists of the 2000s. Transnational Narratives and Identities (Brill Publishers, 2018) as well as of several articles and book chapters. She co-edited with Dr. Simona Emilia Pruteanu the volume Citizenship and Belonging in France and North America. Multicultural Perspectives on Political, Cultural and Artistic Representations of Immigration (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020).

The first decades of the new millennium have been marked by major political changes. Although The West has wished to revisit internal and international politics concerning migration policies, refugee status, integration, secularism, and the dismantling of communitarianism, events like the Syrian refugee crisis, the terrorist attacks in France in 2015-2016, and the economic crisis of 2008 have resurrected concepts such as national identity, integration, citizenship and re-shaping state policies in many developed countries. In France and Canada, more recent public elections have brought complex democratic political figures like Emmanuel Macron and Justin Trudeau to the public eye. Both leaders were elected based on their promising political agendas that aimed at bringing their countries into the new millennium; Trudeau promotes multiculturalism, while Macron touts the diverse nation and the inclusion of diverse ethnic communities to the national model. This edited collection aims to establish a dialogue between these two countries and across disciplines in search of such discursive illustrations and opposing discourses. Analyzing the cultural and political tensions between minority groups and the state in light of political events that question ideas of citizenship and belonging to a multicultural nation, the chapters in this volume serve as a testimonial to the multiple views on the political and public perception of multicultural practices and their national and international applicability to our current geopolitical context.
