Focusing upon the experiences of ethnoracial minorities, particularly African Americans and Mexican immigrants, in Austin, Texas, during the first three decades of the twentieth century, this book sheds new light on the issues of migration, proletarianization, marginalization, adaptation, identity, and community. As well as providing a textured depiction of minority group responses to life in a racially-stratified society, it offers a ground-breaking exploration of the ambivalent relationship between blacks and Latinos in modern America.

Seeking to reverse the trend of overemphasizing the importance of visuals at the cost of written communication strategies, this guide reinforces the power of language in creating and building strong brands. The prowess of large corporations such as Guinness and Unilever, as well as emerging brands, in engaging their audiences and connecting with customers using words is examined by looking at the powerful verbal identity behind each brand. Iconic brand status is presented as an attainable goal once a business learns how to tap hidden creative resources and successfully communicate with customers.

Our purpose in this book is twofold. First, we introduce the basic skill set and knowledge base used by practicing instructional designers. We do this through chapters contributed by experts in the field who have either academic, research-based backgrounds, or practical, on-the-job experience (or both). Our goal is that students in introductory instructional design courses will be able to use this book as a guide for completing a basic instructional design project. We also hope the book is useful as a ready resource for more advanced students or others seeking to develop their instructional design knowledge and skills.
